    1. "This wasn't a video game, buddy," she said in an interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper. "This was real people. There are real consequences to what you did. I'm sorry you've chosen to do that. You have ruined your life and you've disturbed mine, but you took my child from me."

This particular quote got me thinking about how some people seem to perceive events like this. What happened here was so horrible. Many got hurt and this poor brave girl Heather died while trying to peacefully protest . The thing is though following this their were many nasty comments about how she deserved it, things so inhuman I couldn't believe people could say it as a response to someone's death and many others' injuries. For example I saw a comment on Facebook where some individual said she deserved to die in this way because she was fat and useless because she hadn't had a child at her age. It seems to me these kinds of people don't realize this isn't just a video this is reality. Its scary and horrible for lack of a better words. It changes peoples lives and as long as people on both sides continue to watch these news stories and view them as if they're another world nothing will change. There needs to be action hopefully peaceful and hopefully in the good spirit of Heather Heyer for a better world not a more hateful like these Nationalists would like to see. We can't watch these events as if they aren't a reality and not take action in any small or large way that we can.

    1. Third Space

I don't know if this will bear out but for me a Third Space has a slightly different context.

My graduate work is a combination of marketing at ASU and educational technology at BSU.

Third Space in the marketing literature comes out of Bowling Alone http://bowlingalone.com/ and how the white middle and working class moved away from neighborhoods and into suburbia. Putnam, R. D. (2000). Bowling alone: The collapse and revival of American community. New York: Simon & Schuster.

and also Oldenburg , R. (1989). The great good place. New York: Marlowe & Company. https://www.pps.org/reference/roldenburg/ who wrote about what what essentially was the setting for the Cheers.

In educational technology, online learning and especially research in game based learning

Online learning communities are looked at as third spaces or third places. There's been a bit written about this especially in the MMO World of Warcraft.

    1. I therefore contrived the following method.

Even though I inherently know right from wrong, it's difficult to always execute the former in practice. So, BF constructs a method -- a game -- to live life as morally perfect as possible.

    1. “We stand with our brothers,” Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs said. “They have the right and we knelt with them today. To protest, nonviolent protest, is as American as it gets, so we knelt with them today to let them know that we’re a unified front.”

Just because someone on your team doesn't stand doesn't mean you should follow them.

    2. A handful of white players didn’t stand Sunday, but the vast majority of those actively protesting were black.

It doesn't matter their ethnicity they should all kneel of stand for the ones protecting our country.

    3. The protests started more than a year ago when former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick refused to stand during the anthem as a protest of police treatment of minorities.

Colin Kapernick is the one that started this protest last season and it has become very big now

    4. President Donald Trump’s criticism of players who kneel during the national anthem sparked a mass increase in such protests around the National Football League Sunday, as about 200 players sat, knelt or raised their fists in defiance during early games.

People are starting to stop respecting their country due to things that Trump has been saying

    1. Let's break that down a little. Suppose Robinson Crusoe is tired of trying to scoop up fish with his hands and figures out how to turn a tree branch into a spear, increasing his daily catch tenfold. Can Friday, who never thought to make a spear, properly complain that Crusoe has received an "unfair distribution" of fish?

What a bullshit argument... to all intents and purposes, the amount of fish available to both Crusoe and Friday is infinite.. until a Spanish fishing fleet turns up and strips the waters surrounding their island of anything living. Does said fleet still enjoy the moral high ground their superior technology affords them, according to Rand, or are they in fact preventing Friday and Crusoe from providing for their most basic needs by taking more than what could be said to be a reasonable amount of - surprise! - a finite resource? Surely we can acknowledge/reward human ingenuity without pursuing Randian logic to it's ultimately harrowing and absurd end game? Followers of the 'might makes right' mantra are simply looking for a simplistic absolute that refuses to acknowledge the need for societal compassion, or the existence of justice. Simple people need simple stories: people driven by greed alone need justification.

But of course, insisting that those lacking the ingenuity to take as much as they can stuff into an offshore account deserve to live with dignity makes me a communist, right Ayn?

    1. what you really need is some form of mentor that’s an integral part of the user interface

I was actually thinking about something somewhat related to this today. What if you put the effort, money and "engineering" that's in video games industry to creating better "real"/serious software and UIs? How did the video game industry (not only this, you could say TV industry as well) got so much attention and relevance in today's world in the first place?

    1. yes I agree interest in history, in a general sense, is extremely high, especially if you include family history. Also video game soften depend on a fantasy deep history which has to be uncovered

    1. a public cook shop; there eatables are to be found every day, according to the season, dishes of meat, roast, fried and boiled, great and small fish, coarser meats for the poor, more delicate for the rich, of game, fowls, and small birds.

I'm curious about whether or not this is referring to what we would now call a restaurant, or simply a tavern or public house, since I was under the impression that the concept of the restaurant was a far later development.

    2. if he is not a guildsman

It's easy to see how intimidatingly powerful some guilds must have become. They almost operate by mafia rules. This particular passage reminds me of royal rights to forests in which all game in the forest belonged to the king. Here people are limited by whether or not they are members of a guild.

    1. intelligence is largely at the mercy of self-control," and more specifically, the self-control of attention.8

This quote does a very good job of describing a feeling that I believe nearly everyone experiences once in a while, whether it be doing work or homework. It's a really interesting way to think of attention though. Instead of just inherently being bad at paying attention to things for a long period of time, doing homework for hours without giving into the itch to watch Netflix or play a video game is instead an exercise of self-control. Thinking of an attention span that way actually makes it much easier to get work done quickly, while also making it much nicer to reward yourself afterwards.

    1. girls to the building and tinkering universe.

enough with the stereotypes, Sims was originally an architectural design game, then it turned into an interactive dollhouse.

    2. If I’m not learning then it isn’t fun!

If there is no challenge then it isn't fun. I was playing Overwatch last night and was placed on a team with someone who was aimbotting. We won the game very quickly, but it wasn't fun because we didn't have to try. Cheat codes take the fun out of games.

    3. The first thing to realize about game play is that most video games are incredibly difficult to master. If you’re not extremely good at pattern recognition, sense-making in confusing environments, and multitasking, and if you are afraid to constantly explore and push the limits of what you do, then you won’t do well in the game world.

Was this written by a paranoid Baby-boomer? Games are not hard.. learning is not hard..

    1. The rest of the hobbies were either self taught or taught by my past teachers. In terms of gaming, I have taken part of many different Alpha, Beta, and Common Tests for various games from World of Warcraft to War Thunder.

May I say that being able to test the different levels of game during it's production is pretty cool. I do enjoy being able to test games via GameJolt. To see the potential people have. Recently I've played and checked a game called Alaska (I think). A game being made by only one man and so far it is only I'm quite sure Alpha. It's doing quite well so far and looks like it has quite a bit of potential.

    2. Neither my ASD and ADHD are as much of an impact on me now than it was several years ago, but I still carry some of the symptoms of it (Stuttering, repetitive movements, etc.), none of it being life threatening of course. The big turning point for me was when I met two game developers from Wargaming.net, as they have talked to me about their jobs and what I need to do in order to do their jobs well

I have nothing but respect for how you take the initiative in not letting your affliction affect you and your everyday life, avoiding the role of a sort of roadblock that they have the potential of becoming.

Father and son were at chess, the former, who possessed ideas about the game involving radical changes, putting his king into such sharp and unnecessary perils that it even provoked comment from the whitehaired old lady knitting placidly by the fire.

This gives off the theme, setting, and tone, almost like a somber, mellow feel.

This is used to give background of the next following events.

    4. "Check."

I'm wondering what this story will be about. It's interesting how the author is focusing on this specific game of chess and how descriptive the narration is. Is this foreshadowing something important that will happen at the end of the story?

Father and son were at chess, the former, who possessed ideas about the game involving radical changes, putting his king into such sharp and unnecessary perils that it even provoked comment from the whitehaired old lady knitting placidly by the fire.

The author uses imagery to describe a very specific scene.

Father and son were at chess, the former, who possessed ideas about the game involving radical changes, putting his king into such sharp and unnecessary perils that it even provoked comment from the whitehaired old lady knitting placidly by the fire.

There's a lot of very specific and detailed insight by the narrator. Looking at the diction, the author can be considered educated.

Father and son were at chess, the former, who possessed ideas about the game involving radical changes, putting his king into such sharp and unnecessary perils that it even provoked comment from the whitehaired old lady knitting placidly by the fire.

That was honestly the most descriptive and capturing introductions I have ever read. This introduction consists of a lot of imagery. To me, imagery is a very powerful way to "hook" an audience.

    1. Prior knowledge is an important platform for disciplinary learning

In PE prior knowledge can be a huge help for a teacher because if the student has a good understanding of net/ wall games, there is some carry of from game to game, like volleyball and badminton for example. So if students have prior knowledge on the rules and tactics of net/wall games they will have a better chance to succeed. That's not to say that if they do not have the prior knowledge they wont succeed, but if they do have prior knowledge they have a better chance to succeed. I am sure that goes for all other disciplines as well.

    1. Oh, just another kind of outdoor game,

Robert Frost's poem is highly cryptic, but here is a reference to a game. "Another kind of outdoor game," meaning this is an outdoor game, which makes sense because a wall is being built.

    2. Oh, just another kind of outdoor game, One on a side

The dismissing comment of how the speaker's efforts of handling the wall is reduced to being seen as a simply kind of "outdoor game" by another group, reminds me of our class discussions on the dead village. The idea of how two groups of people, those close-minded and open-minded view the same things differently based on how they see their situation. One side sees their activities as a game, another sees it as some kind of hardship.

    1. Please read this Arbitration Agreement carefully. It is part of your contract with Instructure and affects your rights. It contains procedures for MANDATORY BINDING ARBITRATION AND A CLASS ACTION WAIVER. (a) Applicability of Arbitration Agreement. All claims and disputes (excluding claims for injunctive or other equitable relief as set forth below) in connection with the Terms or the use of any product or service provided by Instructure that cannot be resolved informally or in small claims court shall be resolved by binding arbitration on an individual basis under the terms of this Arbitration Agreement. This Arbitration Agreement applies to you and Instructure, and to any subsidiaries, affiliates, agents, employees, predecessors in interest, successors, and assigns, as well as all authorized or unauthorized users or beneficiaries of services or goods provided under the Terms. (b) Notice Requirement and Informal Dispute Resolution. Before either party may seek arbitration, the party must first send to the other party a written Notice of Dispute (“Notice”) describing the nature and basis of the claim or dispute, and the requested relief. A Notice to Instructure should be sent to: Attn: Legal Department, 6330 South 3000 East, Suite 700, Salt Lake City, UT 84121. After the Notice is received, you and Instructure may attempt to resolve the claim or dispute informally. If you and Instructure do not resolve the claim or dispute within 30 days after the Notice is received, either party may begin an arbitration proceeding. The amount of any settlement offer made by any party may not be disclosed to the arbitrator until after the arbitrator has determined the amount of the award, if any, to which either party is entitled. (c) Arbitration Rules. Arbitration shall be initiated through the American Arbitration Association (“AAA”), an established alternative dispute resolution provider (“ADR Provider”) that offers arbitration as set forth in this section. If AAA is not available to arbitrate, the parties shall agree to select an alternative ADR Provider. The rules of the ADR Provider shall govern all aspects of this arbitration, including but not limited to the method of initiating and/or demanding arbitration, except to the extent such rules are in conflict with the Terms. The AAA Consumer Arbitration Rules governing the arbitration are available online at www.adr.org or by calling the AAA at 1-800-778-7879. The arbitration shall be conducted by a single, neutral arbitrator. Any claims or disputes where the total amount of the award sought is less than Ten Thousand U.S. Dollars (US $10,000.00) may be resolved through binding non-appearance-based arbitration, at the option of the party seeking relief. For claims or disputes where the total amount of the award sought is Ten Thousand U.S. Dollars (US $10,000.00) or more, the right to a hearing will be determined by the Arbitration Rules. Any hearing will be held in a location within 100 miles of your residence, unless you reside outside of the United States, and unless the parties agree otherwise. Any judgment on the award rendered by the arbitrator may be entered in any court of competent jurisdiction. Each party shall bear its own costs (including attorney’s fees) and disbursements arising out of the arbitration, and shall pay an equal share of the fees and costs of the ADR Provider. (d) Additional Rules for Non-appearance Based Arbitration: If non-appearance arbitration is elected, the arbitration shall be conducted by telephone, online and/or based solely on written submissions; the specific manner shall be chosen by the party initiating the arbitration. The arbitration shall not involve any personal appearance by the parties or witnesses unless otherwise mutually agreed by the parties. (e) Time Limits. If you or Instructure pursue arbitration, the arbitration action must be initiated and/or demanded within the statute of limitations (i.e., the legal deadline for filing a claim) and within any deadline imposed under the AAA Rules for the pertinent claim. (f) Authority of Arbitrator. If arbitration is initiated, the arbitrator will decide the rights and liabilities, if any, of you and Instructure, and the dispute will not be consolidated with any other matters or joined with any other cases or parties. The arbitrator shall have the authority to grant motions dispositive of all or part of any claim. The arbitrator shall have the authority to award monetary damages and to grant any non-monetary remedy or relief available to an individual under applicable law, the AAA Rules, and the Terms. The arbitrator shall issue a written award and statement of decision describing the essential findings and conclusions on which the award is based, including the calculation of any damages awarded. The arbitrator has the same authority to award relief on an individual basis that a judge in a court of law would have. The award of the arbitrator is final and binding upon you and Instructure. (g) Waiver of Jury Trial. THE PARTIES HEREBY WAIVE THEIR CONSTITUTIONAL AND STATUTORY RIGHTS TO GO TO COURT AND HAVE A TRIAL IN FRONT OF A JUDGE OR A JURY, instead electing that all claims and disputes shall be resolved by arbitration under this Arbitration Agreement. Arbitration procedures are typically more limited, more efficient and less costly than rules applicable in court and are subject to very limited review by a court. In the event any litigation should arise between you and Instructure in any state or federal court in a suit to vacate or enforce an arbitration award or otherwise, YOU AND INSTRUCTURE WAIVE ALL RIGHTS TO A JURY TRIAL, instead electing that the dispute be resolved by a judge. (h) Waiver of Class or Consolidated Actions. ALL CLAIMS AND DISPUTES WITHIN THE SCOPE OF THIS ARBITRATION AGREEMENT MUST BE ARBITRATED OR LITIGATED ON AN INDIVIDUAL BASIS AND NOT ON A CLASS BASIS, AND CLAIMS OF MORE THAN ONE CUSTOMER OR USER CANNOT BE ARBITRATED OR LITIGATED JOINTLY OR CONSOLIDATED WITH THOSE OF ANY OTHER CUSTOMER OR USER. (i) Confidentiality. All aspects of the arbitration proceeding, including but not limited to the award of the arbitrator and compliance therewith, shall be strictly confidential. The parties agree to maintain confidentiality unless otherwise required by law. This Paragraph shall not prevent a party from submitting to a court of law any information necessary to enforce this Agreement, to enforce an arbitration award, or to seek injunctive or equitable relief. (j) Severability. If any part or parts of this Arbitration Agreement are found under the law to be invalid or unenforceable by a court of competent jurisdiction, then such specific part or parts shall be of no force and effect and shall be severed and the remainder of the Agreement shall continue in full force and effect. (k) Right to Waive. Any or all of the rights and limitations set forth in this Agreement may be waived by the party against whom the claim is asserted. Such waiver shall not waive or effect any other portion of this Agreement. (l) Survival of Agreement. This Arbitration Agreement will survive the termination of your relationship with Instructure. (m) Small Claims Court. Notwithstanding the foregoing, either you or Instructure may bring an individual action in small claims court. (n) Emergency Equitable Relief. Notwithstanding the foregoing, either party may seek emergency equitable relief before a state or federal court in order to maintain the status quo pending arbitration. A request for interim measures shall not be deemed a waiver of any other rights or obligations under this Arbitration Agreement. (o) Claims Not Subject To Arbitration. Notwithstanding the foregoing, claims of defamation, violation of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, and infringement or misappropriation of the other party’s patent, copyright, trademark, or trade secret shall not be subject to this arbitration agreement. (p) Courts. In any circumstances where the foregoing Agreement permits the parties to litigate in court, the parties hereby agree to submit to the personal jurisdiction of the courts located within Salt Lake County, Utah, for such purpose. 14.7 Governing Law. The Terms and any action related thereto will be governed and interpreted by and under the laws of the State of Utah, consistent with the Federal Arbitration Act, without giving effect to any conflicts of law principles that provide for the application of the law of another jurisdiction. The United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods does not apply to this Agreement. 14.8 Notice. Where Instructure requires that you provide an e-mail address to access certain features of the Instructure Properties, you are responsible for providing Instructure with your most current e-mail address. In the event that the last e-mail address you provided to Instructure is not valid, or for any reason is not capable of delivering to you any notices required/ permitted by the Terms, Instructure’s dispatch of the e-mail containing such notice will nonetheless constitute effective notice. You may give notice to Instructure at the following address: Attn: Legal Department, 6330 South 3000 East, Suite 700, Salt Lake City, UT 84121. Such notice shall be deemed given when received by Instructure by letter delivered by nationally recognized overnight delivery service or first class postage prepaid mail at the above address.

Okay, your probably wondering why I highlighted this WHOLE chunk of article but I think I have a good reason. I highlighted all of this because it is what I feel like a lot of people do. People will most of the times JUMP whole sections in the terms of use barely anyone reads them now adays. People skip them all together or read the first lines in most cases since people would rather get to their new game / account / then to ' waste ' their time reading a whole terms of use.

    1. But there certainly are not so many men of large fortune in the world as there are pretty women to deserve them….

This quote is an example of the ironic social commentary of the landed gentry class that Austen is known for in her writings, particularly on the subject of female subjugation to matrimonial standards and the place of a woman in society. (In historical context, the class of landed gentry during Austen's time (which she frequently writes about due to her personal experiences of belonging to a family in this class, as is exemplified here) was known for their social circles intended to increase a daughter's chances as an "advantageous" marriage, and these chances increase exponentially when a sister or cousin marries well, as the other women's social circles become of a higher tier of society.) As is the case in the famed opening line to Pride and Prejudice, Austen here comments on the notion that women are considered to be successful in their personal lives and deemed "attractive" and "accomplished" based upon to economic and social benefits of their marriages. In this quote particularly, Austen uses irony to highlight that the number of traditionally pretty women in the world (i.e. land-owning Britain) exceed the number of "eligible" men of high society (based on economic game), yet these women are not deemed worthy of the men above them in rank based on physical appearance alone. Women, though judged based upon physical appearance, are also expected to be of docile nature, highly educated in language and literature, and literate in housekeeping skills and basic artistic qualities in order to be deemed "worthy" of a worthy marriage, wherein their husband's qualifications are that he be rich, handsome, and kind.

Tupac uses repetition; he uses the word women repeatedly to emphasize his feelings towards women and to also get the audience to feel what he feels towards women.

    1. Lost myself in the game when I found myself in a cellThen I found myself in the fame when I lost myself in the pills

This is also a good example of how the author/artist is an antihero. He's being realistic about his life in a way that bluntly shows that he isn't perfect, that he does have problems and issues.

    2. Lost myself in the game when I found myself in a cellThen I found myself in the fame when I lost myself in the pills

This is a short anecdote about the artist's life. When he wound up in a cell--whether it's literal or figurative--he realized that he was lost in his life. Then, when he found fame, he lost himself once again to a more physical object--being drugs.

To a regular person, it is not apparent that another human being could be fragile like the old dictionary. Because of human's physical capabilities and emotional responses, other people tend to ignore the frailness of another human being (whether it's emotionally or physically).

    1. 290HIST 212 U.S. HISTORY 1865 TO PRESENTThe Cold War in Theme AnalysisThe Cold War Era was when the United States ex-erted its world power status, by choice, to thwart the communist threat of the USSR. The efforts of the U.S. made it into the director & protector of the free world’s policies; and other nations expected the U.S. to take this leadership role. The scope and scale of the U.S. industrial-military complex and the nation’s role in WWII put the country in the position of a leading superpower (politically, economically, and militarily). Ultimately, the Soviet Union collapsed due to the in-herent weaknesses of Soviet communism and imperi-alism, leaving the U.S. in the position of being “the” superpower in the world in the 1990s.Capitalism VS. Communism and the “Game of the Cold War” ExplainedDuring the Cold War, the concepts of communism and capitalism (in this case ideally through demo-cratic systems of government) were ideologically and practically in competition with each other. (Be able to identify both terms.) On the world scene the two major superpowers the U.S.S.R. (communist) and the U.S. (capitalist-democratic) demanded that coun-tries align themselves with the communist world or the free world respectively. Some countries aligned with either of the superpowers for ideological rea-sons, but most did so for the geog-economic benefits those alliances brought. Some countries, especially in the Middle East and Latin America, played the two superpowers off of each other in order to get the best “deal” for their national interests.Whenever political-military disputes or disarray hap-pened within or between countries around the globe, the two powers took an active interest in funding and backing their supporters or allies in those struggles (directly or indirectly)

Would USSR and US ever fight directly against each other.

I think the fact that the participant does not hear any objection from the victim and that the victim still responds up to this point gives him the impression that the victim still thinks that the benefit of scientific gains from the experiment outweighs the risks/harms to which he is exposed. The participant might assume that the victim would speak up if he was uncomfortable. I would guess that the participants who did stop at this point would have stopped earlier if the victim had the same response then. Yet, this still does not explain why 65% of the participants continued to shock the victim until the end.

    1. having all students select an online game, app, or learning module from a pre-determined list is not really student choice—after all, someone else curated the list. While it’s a step in the right direction, allowing students time to explore and make choices for themselves bears a stronger connection to personalization

How do we reconcile student choice to make learning personal with frequent need to scaffold choice (in this case, through curation) for learners who are still in effect learning how to learn and need support?

    1. Recall the game of tick-tack-toe. Consider the problem, "How can I win the game of tick-tack-toe?" It is well known that I cannot, if I assume (in keeping with the conventions of game theory) that my opponent understands the game perfectly. Put another way, there is no "technical solution" to the problem. I can win only by giving a radical meaning to the word "win." I can hit my opponent over the head; or I can drug him; or I can falsify the records. Every way in which I "win" involves, in some sense, an abandonment of the game, as we intuitively understand it. (I can also, of course, openly abandon the game--refuse to play it. This is what most adults do.)

Like this analogy; puts meaning to technical win and redifines the word win.

This section catches my attention because I find it interesting to learn the food and culture behind people of different countries. Im surprised by the part about Monkey brains I never thought of that being the choice of cuisine.

    2. When interviewing him or her, do not ask how much funding they have; do not ask how much money they make off their game. Never ask how much they pay their employees.

The don't ask, don't tell policy seems to be very prominent. Because it is all about the illusion of doing good work, when in reality the operation from afar is much better than up close and personal. It reminds me of a hot dog, everybody likes them, but no one wants to know how they are made.

    1. concrete thinkers gain the cognitive skills necessary to effectively solve the problem.”Lou concurred: “PBL allows you to take standards to the next level. Their essay writing improves. They get it! My students had never been in a PBL environment before. It was cool to see kids who normally were not engaged become interested and involved.”Kathy observed a marked change in student discussion skills: “Students are ready to voice their opinions. . . . It’s neat to see them listen to each other’s opinions and open up their minds to consider them.”As these comments indicate, our PSTs perceived PBL lessons as potentially transformative, in terms of both the learning environment and the relationship between students and teacher. This transformative potential was starkest in the case of Frank, who described PBL as a “game changer”:Personal relationships changed. They saw me in a different light after PBL. PBL laid the foundation for their thinking differently and their thinking about me differently. It opened up conversations that hadn’t happened before. Before, I thought I was trapped in a box fitting this certain thing that is a teacher. With PBL, I have this knowledge and the ability to do things better than I’m told they have to be done.Other PSTs agreed. “Students were able to take a social studies problem,” Gary explained, “and get directly involved with the content through their own decision-making and observations rather than rote memorization.” Jane claimed that she “became a facilitator in the learning process.” Bob, despite the fact that his PBL lesson went poorly, acknowledged “students cared about the activity overall and liked to consider competing perspectives.”

The ability to get students involved whereas before they were not is truly telling. One of the challenges my Ct has been trying to address is getting quiet students involved, especially in activities. There are a few louder students that dominate the discussions every time we do one, and maybe a PBL approach may just fix that. Obviously I also very much enjoy the idea of students caring about the activity and making judgements for themselves based upon the content. That's something I try to create every time I step up in class to talk.

    1. The capacity of game environments to produce spatially complex structures as well as respond to players’ location within them helps to generate what Calleja (2011) calls “spatial involvementȄ in the space of the image, whereby movement and navigation rešuire effort and skill. This effort and skill then produce a sense of exploration: ȃwhen a player plots a route through a geographical expanse and then navigates it, it is more likely that she will feel a sense of habitation within the game environment” (

By perfecting the space involved in video games, it helps make the game more realistic for the player. Once the player becomes experienced with the navigational aspects of the game, then they begin to feel as if they are actually in the game.

    2. a geometric understanding of screen space assumes that space is a property of the screen and that different forms of space are dependent on how geometry and graphical lines are presented on the screen. Space is therefore a bounded property of the distance between the lines and polygons that delimit the edges of the game environment and serves to separate and partition how and where the player can move within this space through the joining of straight lines and polygons.

The created spaces in video games are made in order for the game to become an actual reality for the players.

    3. Taylor argues that in giving the player this choice, “the boundaries of the computer game are opened up, and the user is encouraged to break beyond the confines of the gaming world with its circular logic and reinforcement of the system, to enter into real-life activism” (2011: 314).

Media creates (recreates?) representative spaces for people to interact outside of reality in a controlled way.

    4. Simply put, a dichotomy between virtual and real is unhelpful. Players need their bodies to experience and control the spaces and places of video games, and these spaces and places are already tied into particular geographical and material infrastructures, systems, and contexts.

Bodies in conjunction with video games create the space and place. Without the bodies of humans engaging and participating in the video game, there would be no creation of space and place within the vide game.

    5. In “the medium of the videogame,” Wolf (1997) identifies 11 basic geometries in games, including

How video game designers design their video games affects the types of spaces created within their games, thus affecting how gamers interact in these realms. Different games create different place and spaces through these 11 basic geometries.

    6. This chapter has examined various ways of conceptualizing video-game space and place. It has argued that what makes video-game spaces and places unique is that, as digital simulations, video games are possibility spaces – spaces of potential opened up between the rules that limit players’ actions and the freedom that is available within these spaces.

Video games have opened up an alternate reality for the players. For example, video games can place a player in the middle of a combat zone without the player being in the military in real life.

    7. representations of people and places. As a number of writers are now highlighting, there is a clear representational politics to video-game images and how they shape the geographical imagination of users. This politics has two clearly identifiable strands: representations of conĚict and militarism and representations of human identity.

There are types of stereotypes that are involved in video games. For example, in video games about the military, there is much violence and blood shed. When, in reality, violence and blood shed are not the only aspects of the military. Video games have a way of glamorizing not-so-glamorous things.

I think that developing semantic knowledge and semantic networks is important in child development because it allows them to classify items that are uncertain to them. I also believe that parents should play a key role in Semantic Knowledge by correcting their child when they classify objects that look the same into one category (when they are not the same). For example, lion is different then a tiger.

    1. The system should be tuned such that the fastest generally available computer would not be powerful enough to emulate the slowest computer that would be allowed to run the game. Depending on the pace of progress of computer technology and the lifespan of the game, it might eventually be necessary to change these requirements and force the users of the slowest computers to upgrade their hardware if they want to continue playing the game. While this would be frustrating for these players, I don't have a problem with it as long as there is a contract between the players and the game company that both agree to and are bound by - it would be part of the cost of playing without cheaters. Though I would hope that independent servers without these restrictions would also be available if there is demand for them.

In this article, the author thinks hardware limitation is rather a good thing, since game emulation is based on super powerful computers. This idea is apparently opposite to one of my previous resources that claims that hardware improvement is the key to get a huge progress on cheating prevention.

    1. politics is essentially a sport, or at least some phases of politics

I've heard it said that politics is a game-- there are winners and losers, and (sometimes) a little bit of cheating involved. This section reminded me of that comparison, although in a much broader context.

    1. Person vs. person is when General Zaroff forces Rainsford to play in his "game" against him.Person vs. surroundings is when Rainsford was trying to swim to shore and when he was trying to survive in the wilderness/jungle. Person vs. self was when the text said, "He could stay where he was... That was suicide. He could flee. That was postponing the inevitable."

    1. Stack,” in technological terms, can mean a few different things, but the most relevant usage grew from the start-up world: A stack is a collection of different pieces of software that are being used together to accomplish a task. A smartphone’s software stack, for instance, could be described as a layered structure: There’s the low-level code that controls the device’s hardware, and then, higher up, its basic operating system, and then, even higher, the software you use to message a friend or play a game. An individual application’s stack might include the programming languages used to build it, the services used to connect it to other apps or the service that hosts it online; a “full stack” developer would be someone proficient at working with each layer of that system, from bottom to top.

      Definition of a "stack"

    1. A little while later, when that rat is sitting around, its brain sometimes re-creates a nearly identical pattern of electrical impulses zipping between the same set of neurons

This is like what we see in the mind's eye after hours of playing the same video game.

Yikes! Remember the trend of Game of Thrones names, as well?

    1. fling at tops

A top or a “gig” is a hand-constructed toy that is made by shaping wood into a carved wooden top and placing a nail inside as a tip. Children in Jamaica, especially those without the financial means to purchase toys, played with tops by placing a string around the top and releasing it quickly into a spinning motion. A more detailed explanation of a form of the game is here. A video demonstrating how to fashion and use a top is here.

    1. The apparent legal threats that took down these paid hacking tools can be seen as a similar method to fix the game's cheating problem through non-technial means. And while keeping hackers out is important to the interests of fair play, GTA Online's use of microtransactions means hacks that can generate infinite in-game money impact a market that's reportedly worth half a billion dollars to Take Two.

Hack is everywhere, GTA's case shows how online game hacks can directly cause a big amount of loss of money. Not only economic loss, the impression of the game on players are also worsened. So we can see for huge online game, it is super urgent to minimize cheating as much as possible.

    1. For people, the lack of trust in social login might be from fear of identity correlation, fear of what data will be shared, or lack of trust in the security of the social login platform. For relying parties, the lack of trust may result from the perception that the identity provider performs insufficient identity proofing or the fear of outsourcing a critical security function (user authentication) to a third party. An additional concern is allowing a third party of have administrative authority for the relying party's users—not being in control of a critical piece of infrastructure. That is, they don't trust that the rules of the game might change arbitrarily based on the fluctuating business demands of the identity provider.3

Why social login is not seen as legitimate by some users and relying parties.

    1. How do we confront the classrooms we learned in, our own expectations for education, learners’ acquiescence to (and seeming satisfaction with) instructor power, and re-model an education that enlists agency, decolonizes instructional practices, and also somehow meets the needs of the institution?

This is a strong framing of the conundrum of the teacher at so many different levels. I'm going to use this (and cite you and this blog) in a Prof. Dev. I'm doing next week. Teaching tends to return to its ranks those who played the game so well to begin with. (That's what they think they "can" do because that's what they were best at. ) Thus, like the symbol of the ouroboros, the system creates clear boundaries as to who can succeed inside and who will never gain access. However, the system will, as the symbol suggests, eat itself, until it becomes so small and convoluted that it ceases to exist (he waxed, poetically). Thank you.

    1. So gaming communities invest significant resources into finding and stopping cheaters. In the Steam Community, for instance, which has some 30 million users, cheats are clearly labelled so that other users can see them and so that servers can prevent them playing games from which they are banned (although they can play other games).

The cheating issue has drawn a lot of attentions of game companies, they have been investing lots of resources on catching and limiting cheaters.

    1. If you frequent the Overwatch sub-Reddit, or any forum that regularly discuses the game, you will have no doubt ran into many reports of players getting abused by others during matches, especially in Competitive Play.

Finally game companies figured out reporting system to decrease cheating. However, some inevitable problems are still no ignorable. Although reporting system has made cheating detection more accurate and effective, there could also be some malicious reports that can have honest players be banned. So each solution has its advantages and disadvantages and both of them would be deadly.

    1. Cheating is an issue in online games, and Blizzard is anticipating that cheaters may inevitably be an issue that they have to deal with in their upcoming team-based FPS, Overwatch. In a forum post written today, the developer talked about the penalties it’s imposing towards those who choose to cheat in the game.

This is a news that Blizzard has done corresponding actions for cheating behaviors. Looks like being permanently banned is what most game platforms would like to do. Also there will be reporting system for players to supervise each other. We can see that game companies are trying best to prevent cheating behavior in different aspects. But still, their attention probably can never get loose.

vatz: rhetoric is a cause not an effect of meaning

designer of game: playing is a cause not an effect of meaning

the game has meaning because it was played

rhetoric has meaning because it is used

    1. What is of particular significance is that just as rules help delineate the game world from the real world, learning environments are set off from other spaces in everyday life by the set of conditions that distinguish them from leisure, home, or work environments.

Isn't this against the ethos of digital pedagogy, i.e. the investment in discrete places?

    1. 48 The majority of governmental interest in games has been around the control of content, particularly sexual or violent content (Kovacs 2006; Kyle Orland, Wired, 17 January 2013). Much as with other media, governments have sought to impose a sense of moral order and the stamp of the contemporary political climate upon games, leading to the banning of games denounced as ‘murder simulators’ (see ‘Video game “sparked hammer murder”’, CNN World Edition, 29 July 2004; also Orr 2006, 44) and the support of games such as America’s Army, which attempts to offer an explicit and realistic presentation of modern warfare. Game developers and publishers contribute to this regulation, shaping games that match public preferences and then limiting player behaviour within games in order to accord with what are seen as prevailing sensibilities. Inevitably, then, these structures and limitations raise concerns of freedom of speech, both for players regulated by developers and publishers, and for developers and publishers regulated by governments

    2. 51 With that in mind, processes of player regulation become difficult to implement. How is it possible to fairly distinguish between something that is genuinely problematic, and something that is simply annoying, while retaining the notion that this is a game environment rather than a space for work?

    1. The most obvious pathway is the stepping stones aproach. Sequential in nature, it involves doing one step at a time in a prescriptive manner. See for example, Doug Belshaw’s kanban badges using Trello. Another option is where badges are a part of a collection. Like the game Trivial Pursuit, this is where several achievements are grouped together in a non-linear manner. Perscriptive in nature, collections can be linked with the completion of standards or levelling up. In contrast to perspective badge ecosystems, constellations offer a more open-ended approach where users can choose from a range of possibilities, carving out any number of pathways. This is conducive to life-long learning and offers the potential to write your own learning story. Open to borrowing from different providers, it is for this reason that it is descriptive rather than prescriptive.

    1. On the mercenary side, photographers like Ron Galella (fortunately or unfortunately known as the godfather of paparazzi in America) would shoot the stars for gossip rags and Page Six featurettes, where Basquiat made numerous appearances. According to Galella, the paparazzi game was more dignified back then. “Today they hound celebrities because they are out for money,” he has said. “They seek pictures showing cellulite and fat—I never did that, I wanted beauty.”

Currently, there are still many people who are hurt by media violence. This person is a famous people. We should to protection him. It is really serious issue which we need to solved.

    1. the whole race of birds

Charles Burr Todd (1906) includes a letter from the town clerk of Killingworth. The official was unable to find any records about a blackbird bounty but remembered, from his youth, the town had a history of "injurious bird" shooting competitions.

"the men of the Northern part did yearly in the Spring choose two leaders, and then the two sides were formed: the side that got beaten should pay the bills. Their special game was the hawk, the owl, the crow, the blackbird, and any other bird supposed to be mischievous to the corn. Some years each would bring them in by the bushel. This was followed up for only a few years, for birds began to grow scarce.."

This is so interesting! Games like this really encourage interest especially in people who may not have heard of these types of things in any other way before!

    2. Indeed, I made an android-only game out of it

I think this actually opens up a really interesting concept! I remember how growing up I enjoyed learning about mythology through game like Age of Mythology! Not only did it spark an interest in Greek mythology and history, the game also held some pretty interesting historical facts as well. I think turning historical study into games can have a huge positive impact on how kids might become interested and learn about history.

    3. Indeed, I made an android-only game out of it.

I think this is cool. It's a good way to mobilize volunteer work, and I think the transcriptions that result would be as accurate as any (as long as they are checked for quality, which is another issue discussed well in this article about the Bentham Project) What do the rest of you think of "gamifying" historical contribution? Does it improve the amount or quality of sources being digitized? Does it impact how scholars should look at the resulting source?

    1. there is overlap between game play and engaged learning, with both being characterized by multiple attempts, the ability to overcome early failure, intrinsic interest in the “story” (be that course material or game narrative), and pursuit of a clear set of attainable objectives.

Clearly stated - if learning becomes more similar to gaming, there will be deeper learning.

    2. This tongue- in- cheek characterization shows how having a central mission powerfully motivates game players. Once they buy into the mission, the sky is the limit, moti-vationally speaking.

The biggest motivator is true purpose. If we could engage students in learning in school this way, we'd have real growth in our schools and in their future.

    3. it’s important to realize that game development is more daunting than it may appear. The develop-ment team, at a minimum, should involve a content expert, instruc-tional designer, graphic designer, and programmer, all working together on a structured plan with benchmarks and multiple test-ing phases— hardly the lone person we might picture putting a game together in his or her spare time.4

I realized this when I thought I can single handedly create a role playing game with Unreal Engine 4 for Lyme Crush. But yes, gamification is a potential tool to increase engagement.

    4. Which makes you wonder, do gamers actually enjoy failing? As it turns out, yes”

Failing multiple times makes success so much sweeter. If it was easy, the game wouldn't be so much fun!

    5. Optimizing challenge means that the participant has to stay fully engaged (not too easy), yet keep attaining enough small successes along the way to feel a sense of mastery (not too hard)

This is what makes a good game fun!

    1. As legend has it, singing the national anthem at sporting events began during the 1918 World Series, when the nation was at war. As recounted by the New York Times of Sept. 6, 1918, it was the seventh-inning stretch of the first game between the Chicago Cubs and the Boston Red Sox.

The ease of access to online gaming coupled with the extent of social exchanges can result in numerous tensions.

I like the structure of this introductory paragraph. I believe that this is the transition sentence before the introduction. However it is a bit vague. If you specify why the online games is not flawless/ why it caused tension more it would be stronger.

    1. I could not imagine that to preserve their pow-er and wealth, the moneyed elites would seek to dismantle redistributionist New Deal policies. The New Deal was built on a system of progressive taxation and public investment. If U.S. elites were to retain their relative wealth and power as the rest of world began to compete with the U.S. economi-cally, then the progressive edifice that Roosevelt had constructed would have to be set aside, taxes on wealth and profits reduced, wages suppressed, and a greater share of government costs shifted to the working class

who are the winners, who makes the rules, who are the players, and what do we tell the losers to continue playing the game?

    1. Anonymity is one of the major characteristics of online environments (Johnson 1997). Being anonymous online gives individuals’ opportunities to behave in socially undesirable or even harmful ways without being sanctioned (Kiesler et al. 1984, Sproull and Kiesler 1986), as in the cases of online flaming (insulting, swearing, or using offensive language on the Internet) and game cheating.

    1. A school district's policy of permitting student-led, student-initiated prayer before football games is unconstitutional.vii It is also unconstitutional for a school official, including a coach, to initiate, lead, or participate in a team in prayer. viii Nor may a school official ask a team member or any other student to initiate or lead a prayer before, during or after a public or school-sponsored athletic activity or event.ix It is also unconstitutional for a member of the clergy to offer prayers before or after public school athletic activities or events.x Voluntary prayer presented and led by students without official permission or sanction may be constitutional, provided that it is not coercive in any way.

Personally, (even though I am a Deist) I loved the school prayers before games. The man who always did was so emotional about it, and then the band would play the football boys in. It really set a strong feeling to the game, theres no reason this shouldn't be legally permitted. Footballs king in my small southern town, and praying is a traditional thing.

As we touched down, jeeps and four-by-fours roared up, bringing injured soldiers for evacuation, goods and gear to ship out, then reloading with arriving people and equipment. Yet children stood a few feet from the soldiers, complaining about the disruption to their soccer game.

    2. We think of Steve Jobs in his black turtleneck as the origin of our iPhones,

After the video game we played today and reading this article it is apparent that our iPhones come from so much more than Steve Jobs.

    1. they helped orientate and shape my thinking rather than provide ‘results’ that I analysed, interpreted, and/or presented in the book.

Going off the idea that @angelachiesa mentioned in her annotation above, I can relate significantly to this point and believe that the process of doing something can make you grow as an individual. For me, doing research for an assignment is like a never ending game of connect the dots and most of it never ends up getting used. However, it still plays an important part in the process.

    1. According to a recent study by online job matching service TheLadders, the fastest growing jobs are in user experience design, iOS and Android development, and business intelligence–some of which didn’t exist before 2007.The study, which gathered key word search data from among its 6 million members, also found that middle management jobs are being phased out. Among the top 10% of growing jobs, less than 2% of titles contain the word “manager” or “director,” which points to a trend that you can still be a professional in a high-paying position, but the end game isn’t a gold plaque with a management title tacked to your name.Mark Newman, CEO of digital interviewing service HireVue, says the company is witnessing similar trends as it helps place people with companies such as Hilton, GE, Chipotle, and others. “Overall, HireVue is seeing that jobs of the future are design and data scientist jobs,” he says.
    1. “Linking” items together on a website is not just a means of facilitating browsing; it is also a machine-readable way of doing what historians do all the time when we “link” sources, ideas, concepts and arguments together. The link, as Gardner Campbell has eloquently explained, is a powerful way to “symbolize ideas about relationship” and thus to symbolize the act of higher-order cognition itself.

Has anyone else played The Wiki Game? You race another person to travel between two random Wikipedia pages just by clicking links. This part of the post reminded me of that game, and made me understand just how incredible it is that a game like that exists. We have so much knowledge, which we link together, which creates more knowledge, and so on forever and ever. No wonder big data has emerged along with the web. Even without user-generated content, the act of linking causes a deluge of data.

    1. often organize themselves and others in terms of affinity spaces

In my own experiences I've seen a growing universe of affinity spaces that each seeks to be the center of it's on solar system. Few link to each other the way the RTS space seem to do.

Furthermore, few have a single focus of "the game" which has it's own team of developers and markers working constantly to draw users to the game and to the various affinity spaces.

    2. games change in response to player reactions, but also in the present

The game is rapidly responding to millions of players located around the country. Compare this to how well, if at all, the education establishment is responding to millions of learners in classrooms throughout the US, or the world.

    1. The home-game version of this means no longer encouraging kids to spring straight ahead to the right answer. When UGA’s Runco was driving through California one day with his family, his son asked why Sacramento was the state’s capital—why not San Francisco or Los Angeles? Runco turned the question back on him, encouraging him to come up with as many explanations as he could think of.Preschool children, on average, ask their parents about 100 questions a day. Why, why, why—sometimes parents just wish it’d stop. Tragically, it does stop. By middle school they’ve pretty much stopped asking. It’s no coincidence that this same time is when student motivation and engagement plummet. They didn’t stop asking questions because they lost interest: it’s the other way around. They lost interest because they stopped asking questions.
    1. Soon, newsrooms, educators and organizations will be able to adapt the game to their own needs — it's open source. Teachers can ask students to select news stories to input into the game as a way to challenge their classmates.

This is a valuable idea because of the way students move from being game players to game masters, and are engaged in critical literacy. I could easily see a students' selections taking a social justice bent related to race relations in the US.

    1. where the schoolboard wants to ban any game with "human targets."

I hate these types of games with said human targets. Someone can get hurt almost instantly.

    1. whether games promote violent action or whether they make us fat through inactivity. Such accusations stem partly from overly general assumptions about a medium's content and reception (which, in the case of videogames, is assumed to be violent scenarios that induce aggression). But they also emerge from overly general assumptions about a medium's properties and the contexts in which those properties get deployed.

This short passage addresses the social issue of the adaptation of violent and unmotivated activity due to video games. Like the author briefly mentioned, I believe it does depend on the content of the medium. A violent video game will most likely encourage violent behavior but a video game that has an adventurous and spontaneous plot will most likely not. The genre of the video game builds the personality and character of the player. As for the promotion of inactivity, I think that it depends on the the level of addiction. If one is heavily obsessed with a game, they probably would not want to participate in anything but the game, therefore resulting in prevalent inactivity.

      don't understand the intention here

    1. Further investigation of one college student who participated in the study revealed that she knew the relevant physical properties and formulas, yet, in the context of the game, she fell back on her untrained conception of how the physical world works

Demonstrating mastery of an idea or concept should include some sort of application component - can students take what they've learned and apply it to a different situation?

    1. Done regularly whenever she addresses the viewer, though it's justified as the show originally was supposed to be set in a computer game. This then leads into a ten second pause during which she stares directly at you waiting for a "response from the viewer."
    1. To give you a small sense of how much money we are talking about, let me show you two quick examples. The first is a table put together by the University of Iowa that shows how much it costs for the University to provide academic journal titles electronically to faculty and staff:

This reality, increasing journal and database costs, is a bit of a game changer in my experience. Particularly in academic settings, few faculty know or understand the huge cost for journals and such. I had a colleague who saw that half an academic library’s budget was in licensing costs and he was ready to claim mismanagement and incompetence. It was only after talking about the reality of surging costs that he went from mismanagement to an open access activist.

One of the great strategies academic librarians have used around this is making these costs completely transparent and involving academic units in deciding which journals to cut to meet a budget – or turning the faculty into advocates for the library to prevent cuts.

    1. Anyone working with the latest generation of MIDI musical instruments – like the Eigenharp, LinnStrument, ROLI Seaboard, Haken Continuum and the Madrona Soundplane – has probably encountered the work of Belgium-based programmer & electronic musician Geert Bevin.

      My thoughts exactly.

And it carries over to much of the world of expressiveness in electronic music, centred around the emerging MPE standard: Multidimensional Polyphonic Expression.

Let me geek out a minute. ;)

Coming late to this MPE game, been really taken by the fact that Bevin’s name is everywhere. Given his work with many manufacturers, it’s no exaggeration to say that this type of musical expressiveness wouldn’t have expanded the way it did if it weren’t for Geert Bevin. Of course, MPE isn’t that mainstream, yet. You could even say that it’s a bit of a niche, in terms of the already peculiar world of electronic music. Besides, it’s just an implementation of some things which have been in the MIDI specifications from the start, over 30 years ago. But there’s more than smoke, here.

A few days ago, ROLI has announced the Seaboard Block, which might be the most affordable MPE device as of yet. It’s also the missing piece of the puzzle in ROLI’s lineup, linking the Seaboard line of highly expressive keyboards with the Blocks line of modular controllers. Some have been saying that the Seaboard Block is the point at which the Blocks line starts to make sense. Both there are more dots to connect. One is that ROLI also owns JUCE, which is fast becoming the tool of choice to develop music apps on multiple platforms, including mobile. Not sure how sophisticated JUCE’s MPE support is, but it does have some MPE-specific classes. Another point, mentioned in the comments on this interview, is that Bevin was instrumental in the MPE support in Moog’s Model 15 and Animoog synths on iOS. As these apps are quite influential, their continued development can have a big impact on the iOS part of the MPE scene.

Speaking of iOS, the fact that the latest version of Audiobus can route MIDI could open up interesting possibilities. Jesse Chappell, developer of two MPE-savvy iOS apps (ThumbJam and DrumJam) has been teasing a forthcoming app which would somehow deal with MPE in a thorough way.

And there’s a broader context for all of this. Hardware and software devices for electronic music (controllers, synthesizers, loopers, etc.) have been integrating into complete solutions. Several manufacturers have been doing both hardware and software. There aren’t that many hardware solutions for the sound output from MPE, but it’d only take a fairly simple box (maybe Arduino-based?) to allow much of the hardware synth world to receive MPE in an appropriate way (something which is already possible in software).

So it really is a fascinating time to be getting into musical expressiveness through digital means.

    1. he mere perception of opportunity is all that is required to keep the game alive

This is so tied to Kumashiro's questions that it even uses the same analogy, of the "game." What questions do we ask to keep the game alive?

    1. Week 2 of #digciz June 2017 is coming to and end.

Should they end? Maybe we should consider the "long tail" here? Or is that game worth the candle? A good facilitating citizen might just cast their eye to those who participated and continue to encourage a connection.

    1. Each student on a team writes a question and the team agrees on the correct response. All questions are compiled and sent to another team.

Using the RealTime Board as a team collection system for this type of activity would be efficient in putting this game together. Especially with two teams competing

    1. “My second year in the league I made my decision on one thing, I said I wanted to be the greatest ever to do it. I said I wanted to be talked about at Thanksgiving dinner when people are sitting around the table and they talked about the greatest who ever came through--I wanted to be that guy. I started push-ups at 10 years old to make sure no man would put his hands on my mom again. I just got through with 2,500 this morning. It don’t stop. Just because the game stops, it don’t stop.

LOGOS: The speaker then brings up the years that hes been and the the amount of mornings that he's gone through, and bring up thanksgiving and the gathering of people and find out who's the best

    2. Beat me and it aint in no video games brother. Y’all don’t need to be the most popular person on Twitter. I’ll tell you what, when you step in between those lines that’s what we’re letting go. That’s what we’re letting go. We’re letting go the essence of what the University of Miami was built by. It’s built by pure competition. One on one battles. Then I’ve got to share something with you.

The speaker is approaching a logos appeal by bring up popularity on twitter and the competition that was built by Miami. By implying that most players at that time think that it's a video game and it's all about being popular on twitter. He saying that by letting go, you can build off of Miami's competition.

    1. like I am doubling down for no good reason other than stubborness (and the few folks who are engaged).

I suppose we have to go back to our personal reasons and expectations.

Personally, I prefer to map how I see it, rather than play the connections game as a priority. However one can not be blind to the latter.

The other thing is to take into account how suddenly an object can take on new meaning for other people - they discover an old idea/an old writer/artist and it/he/she become highlighted.

The same with teaching. I know that many of the seeds I sow will provide no yield immediately but over time may sprout as a result of a conjunction of conditions.

    2. I will carry on for awhile with #digciz with a measure of leeriness and worldly weariness and some forced cheeriness, hoping that the game is worth the candle.

Yup, likewise. Needs more media for me (I know, that's up to me to sort out).

    1. AlphaGo is going out on top. After beating Ke Jie, the world’s best player of the ancient Chinese board game Go, for the third time today at the Future of Go Summit in Wuzhen, Google’s DeepMind unit announced that it would be the last event match the AI plays.

This makes me feel worse somehow than if it was going to continue to play. Seems like it is saying: well, tick the box for beating humans at Go...

    1. Pimps prey on young women and girls by finding their weakness and then exploiting it. It is easier to manipulate children, and by the time children become adults, they are broken down and dependent on a pimp. After the pimp gets into your mind, it’s easy for him to maintain control, much like a domestic abuser.

Trafficking is like a game to the "pimps", they make girls comfortable, then powerless and weak. hat way the girls don't try to escape and they're loyal from then on.

    1. Imagine you go to a National Basketball Association (NBA) season game; you attend the Golden State Warriors versus the Houston Rockets at the Oracle Arena. It is a great game, the emotions are high and the players are physical. The game has two minutes and ten seconds left in double overtime and Houston is up 126 to 123. Kevin Durant, of the Warriors, shoots a three; the shot doesn’t go, Draymond Green appears to have grabbed the rebound in an aggressive way and puts up a flailing shot. You hear two referees blow their whistles and a floor referee walks over to the live media and review table, whirling his finger in the air, as if to call for a rewind. Instantly, the referee reviews the play several times, spending about three minutes watching the four second play.

I like how you've created exigence with an "imagine this" scenario!

    1. it has been given over to me, and I give it to anyone I please

So in the Luke version, the devil has been given everything...and not only is the devil offering it to Jesus, but states "I can give it to anyone I please." Kinda like, Jesus, just so you know, you ain't the only game in town.

    1. Maybe one way to do that is showing what the consequences of wrong decisions would be."

For example, in a game you learn if you do something bad, you get a consequence, such as GTA, you steal or do something illegal , you get arrested.

    1. Nuclear power was to the twentieth century what steam power had been to the nineteenth: a game changer. Suddenly humanity had a power source that didn’t pollute, was efficient and practically unlimited, and so had the potential to change the planet overnight.

I don't think nuclear energy is the best thing because there is so much waste that we don't know what to do with it.

    1. But you guys are way ahead of the game. You already know who you are and that peace, that peace that we’re after, lies somewhere beyond personality, beyond the perception of others, beyond invention and disguise, even beyond effort itself.

In "Values and messages conveyed in college commencement speeches",Richard T. Kinnier and Jenifer J. Partch extract the values and messages given in college commencement speeches from 1990-2007, which reflects the values of American culture. The results from the data present that many of the speakers at college commencements centered their message on a specific topic-- 64% on helping others, 61% on doing the right thing,52% on on expanding horizon, and 48% on be true to yourself.

In Jim Carrey's commencement speech, he focuses on the message of being true to yourself. Because students are graduating from college, they have experienced new things and learned throughout their college years and will continue to learn who they are.

Carrey mentions that he didnt know who he was or what he wanted to do until he saw his father and his father's desire for comedy. But he tells the graduating class that they already passed that step and that they need to continue to strive doing what they want to do and never settle for the easy things in life. With ideas, values, and customs changing and transitioning into a more free society and choice of the individual, Carrey uses the trend of the changing culture for students to strive to do what is beneficial for them and in turn, how students will use their choice to contribute to society.

Just as Kinnier and Partch examines the messages delivered college commencement speeches, using generic criticism, it is clear that, based on the experiences of the rhetor, who is deliverer of the speech, he/she targets the audience with one of the messages mentioned prior. The focus of the speech centers around students contributing to society, helping others, striving towards their dream, etc. As these are the general topics of messages delivered during a commencement speech, more in depth, the rhetor delivers a message based on their personal experiences, just as Jim Carrey did. Upon delivering such messages, they instill fear that they will regret decisions made upon practicality or stability-- that this will close their horizons and limit them from great opportunities. Because students are exiting with learning experiences in their field of interests, they are to use that not only for their own benefit but for the good of society. As education serves as a purpose to create productive workers and working citizens, the underlying or hidden message is that they use what they have gain and with many open doors, contribute to society, as they were initially made to become.

"Values and Messages Conveyed in College Commencement Speeches" Jenifer J. Partch and Richard T. Kinnier. Current Psychology. 30.1 (Mar. 2011) p81.

    1. “There’s a process you develop as a parent to keep your child from crying, and that night I couldn’t calm Joel,” Green says. “It made me think, ‘This is like a game where the mechanics are subverted and don’t work.’”

This thought of his shows what type of parent he is. He truly cared about his son.

    2. Players breaking down in sobs and quickly exiting the booth.

This shows Green has the ability to create an emotional game. Showing he has a "Soft Side".

    3. “There’s a process you develop as a parent to keep your child from crying, and that night I couldn’t calm Joel,” Green says. “It made me think, ‘This is like a game where the mechanics are subverted and don’t work.’”

Here they transition back into narrative ny using quotes.

    1. "I'm sure there have been guys who didn't realize they had a concussion and just kept playing. It's a violent game. The head injuries are the most dangerous to play with. We're trained to play no matter what. If you can run, and you're able to focus and know your responsibilities, you're usually out there playing. You wouldn't have enough players if no one played hurt."

Good use of strong quote to create exigence!

    1. Background On the front page, you were introduced to two widely recognized methods of improving education through the use of video games. But Gamification and Game-Based Learning did not just spring up from nothingness. Read below to see how the discussion about video games in the classroom evolved into its modern state.

I like how you're making your visitors swim through the website with signposting. However, you may want to make this text darker, especially the title 'background.'

    1. When you succeed or expect to succeed, the brain secretes dopamine. And when a player chokes, seeming to lose control of his game, it can mean that the brain has released to much dopamine in response to the intense focus on success.

This is really interesting. I would like to find more scientific information like this to back up these ideas.

    1. rubber

According to the OED, rubber refers to "A set of games (usually three or five), the last of which is played to decide between the opponents when each has won an equal number; (hence) the winning of more than half the individual games by one side" (OED).

This phrase altogether indicates that Lady Middleton was partaking in a card game upon hearing the news of Marianne.

    2. Pall Mall

"The name of a street in central London (running between St James's Street and Haymarket) which developed from an alley [in the 17th century] in which the game of pall-mall was played"(OED). The game: players attempt to get wooden ball with a mallet down the alley and through a raised iron ring in as few strokes possible. 1. Forza Horizon 3 Hot Wheels will transport you to a new Australian locale, where orange tracks spiral and loop into the air and iconic Hot Wheels cars come to life.

I think that the hot wheels theme gives the game a more of a stunt devil game and there is more than just racing

    2. It’s time to make your Hot Wheels fantasies come true! Forza Horizon 3’s Hot Wheels expansion is available now exclusively on both Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs (Xbox Play Anywhere).

This is important to me because i own the game and i plan on purchasing the expansion

    1. Lady Middleton proposed a rubber of casino to the others.

"A set of games (usually three or five), the last of which is played to decide between the opponents when each has won an equal number; (hence) the winning of more than half the individual games by one side. Also in early use: †the final decisive game (obs.)" (OED).

"Casino first appears in the card game literature at the end of the eighteenth century in London, and shortly afterwards in Germany" ... "The aim in Casino is to capture cards from a layout of face up cards on the table. A card is captured by playing a matching card from hand. It is also possible to capture several cards at once if their values add up to the value of the card played" (John McLeod, Casino, page 1).

    1. They’ve learned how to eliminate external influences to win the game.

This is important to know for your job. You need to know how to deal with losing and know how to handle a victory.

    1. To game theorists, many situations can be modeled in a similar way to the classic Prisoner’s Dilemma including issues of nuclear deterrence, environmental pollution, corporate advertising campaigns and even romantic dates.

See The Tragedy of the Commons.

    2. Rationally (i.e., from the point of view of the numbers involved), we can assume that both will want to minimize their sentences. Herein lies the rub - if both avoid confessing, they will serve 2 years each – a total of 4 years between them. If they both happen to confess, they each serve 5 years each, or 10 years between them. However they both face a tantalizing option: if A confesses while his partner doesn’t confess, A can get away in 6 months leaving B to languish for 10 years (and the same is true for B): this would result in a collective total of 10.5 years served. For the game, the optimal solution is assumed to be the lowest total years served, which would be both refusing to confess and each therefore serving 2 years each. The probable outcome of the dilemma though is that both will confess in the desire to get off in 6 months, but therefore they will end up serving 10 years in total. This is seen to be non-rational or sub-optimal for both prisoners as the total years served is not the best collective solution.

This argument seems flawed. Normative egoism concerns itself with individuals, not with collectives. Therefore, one ought to look at both individuals separately and conclude in both cases that defecting is the best option. The fact that both individuals cooperating would have been better for both of them, is irrelevant, because there is no guarantee, at the time of making the decision, that the other person will cooperate.

    1. Affinity 1

Hi Mike, great job! I thought your presentation was very organized and professional looking. I thought your title cards really added to the good organization of it. I appreciated the overview you gave of the actual game in the very beginning of your presentation, in case viewers were not familiar with the game. Like you, I also like old-school 2D games, so it was pretty interesting to see this game, as I was unfamiliar with it until now. I also love sandbox games, so I think this is one I will probably be checking out soon. The affinity space, terraria.org, looks to be a very good space. I was impressed with the Wiki content for users, and how useful it must be for new users especially. It was also nice to see an active, lively community. Well done!

    2. Affinity 1

      Hi Mike,

In viewing your affinity space it would seem that to really be an insider one must obtain a certain skill level before being considered a serious part of the community. Though there are sections for newbies and tutorials to help them get started, you stated many times that the majority of spaces on the forums require that a user have more than a base knowledge of the game to participate. Though it was not directly stated by you, this also seemed to be a limitation within the space as it limited your confidence in participating in the space often. I wonder what you would have liked to see more of as a newbie to make you feel welcome?

Despite this, it was nice to see that the community itself was well moderated and provided a safe zone for users to contribute. Your contributions to the space about being a newbie were well received by both the moderators and general users. I really enjoyed you sharing that there was an introduction forum for those who were brand new to the game. Even the fact that there were a group of “teacher” users that wanted to help made the space feel like a welcoming space. A quality attribute for such an involved game. Did you ever get to a place where you felt comfortable being a teacher to someone else in the space?

The three Gee and Hayes features that you shared summed up the space well. Having a common passion, not being segregated by age, and all skill levels can share the space were very evident throughout your walkthrough of the affinity space. You provided snapshots of posts by young and old users and new and experienced users, yet the common thread that weaved thema altogether were their evident passion for the game Terraria.

P.S. I really enjoyed the background music in your presentation. Were those scores from the game?

    1. Whether watching a sports game or playing video games, this is the center of the social aspect of the space. We stay up late into the night playing NBA 2k17 and FIFA, mixing it up with the occasional episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia or whichever NBA match-up there is that evening

The first draft did not mention what the television is used for. I stated that it aided in the transition from peacefulness to social interaction, but I never specified the role it plays in this. By specifying the activities that surround the television, the audience can better understand how it makes the room a social hub.

    2. For example, the board currently says “Brian is a spy” in reference to a game we play called The Resistance. As people passed, they wrote sarcastic and witty responses in the style of an Instagram post’s comments. To add to the humor, this “post” has thousands of dislikes

Before this addition, there was no concrete example for what one can find on the whiteboard. This was a problem because it did not give a specific image for the audience. This sentence was added because it allows the reader to understand the kinds of things posted on the board and how the floor responds to it.

    1. Rewriting is the essence of writing well—where the game is won or lost.

This sentence does a good job conveying just how important the revision process is. We all have great ideas and great stories, but the way they are expressed is what truly makes them great

    1. (2)

I have heard about this game, but I really do not know much about it. Mostly my preconceptions are probably that of nerdy guys sitting around in a basement, I am glad I got to see a different side of this. I am assuming that deck designers is a role in the game? It’s great you had the opportunity to do something you already had a previous knowledge about. I am curious how your first interactions went? Did you know anyone personally who used this community. I have not seen anyone mention a portion of a site directly talking about rumors surrounding the game. In your opinion, are any of the rumors found to be true? I am curious how people could even find out new info. I know the IPhone is known for its leaks but I am surround that a community of this size would have such conspiracy theories.<br> Did you find any negatives or limitations with this specific affinity space? It definitely seems feedback from peers was helpful to you in your deck building. Do you think this is something that you would us in the future? I don’t know how much more I learned about Minecraft the Gathering: Salvation but I appreciate a sneak peek into the minds of the players. The whole rumor side of this really makes me wonder what could possibly lie deeper than just the game. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Research (link is external) in Social Psychological and Personality Science suggests that there are some fairly major benefits to being bald. The researchers had participants (men and women) rate photos of bald men, and men with a full head of hair, on how dominant, agreeable, and old they might be. The bald men were perceived to be about one year older, slightly more agreeable, and much more dominant. Overall, being bald, or not, made a big difference in how men were perceived.

This article states that bald men were generally perceived as more dominant, and as older than their haired counterparts. They weren't seen as specifically more attractive, but they had positive qualities, exactly like the article from BBC. This article refers to another study on perceptions of male dominance.

Another 18% say this is not true for most games, while 14% say this is true for most games. More than a quarter of all adults (27%) say this is true for some video games but not others. Notably, the responses to this question show no differences by gender. Young adults are split on the portrayal of women – 24% each of those 18 to 29 think most video games do and do not portray women poorly.

This model shows the growing concern with the lack of understanding of morality within video game culture. The skewed reaction from the population tested is evidence that the culture has reached a psychological evolution in changing values.

    1. Damsels in distressOf course, the issue of gender ratios in video games is not a new one - but it did seem to be on more observers' minds at E3 this year, with observers tweeting about a lack of female characters in Sony's presentation and videogame site Polygon publishing an article titled "There were more severed heads than women presenters at E3 2014".Studies have consistently shown that at least since the 1990s, the percentage of female characters in video games has remained steady at around 15%."It's amazing how little has changed," says University of Pennsylvania professor, Yasmin Kafai, the co-editor of one of the seminal books on gender in videogames, Beyond Barbie and Mortal Kombat, published in 2008.

The notion of the damsel in distress is a common theme among video game developers. Designing a character specifically to be a sex symbol was the main concern at this year's E3. Which poses the question, "are women's rights truly protected in the digital realm?"

    1. Sexism in video gaming is prejudiced behavior or discrimination based on sex or gender as experienced by people who play and create video games, primarily women. This may manifest as sexual harassment or in the way genders are represented in games, such as when characters are presented according to gender-related tropes and stereotypes. The demographics of video game culture have changed since the 1980s and 90s, when video games were perceived as something of interest mainly to young men. Women make up about half of all game players as of the 2010s.[1] This change, as well as publicized incidents of harassment such as the Gamergate controversy in 2014, have contributed to industry professionals and media increasingly paying attention to issues related to sexism in video gaming.

This definition aptly supplies context to our findings and is an example of the psychological trends in the digital era.

    1. Gender is not a topic unfamiliar to the world of gaming. According to the International Game Developers Association (2005), 88.5% of game developers are male and 92% of developers are heterosexual. Also, both female and LGBTQgame developers held stronger opinions that the game industry lacks diversity and that diversity has a direct impact on the games produced. Thus, the viewpoint from which the majority of games are developed is o ne t ha t is held by a largely homogenous contingent of game developers. With such an overwhelmingly large percentageof heterosexual malesas game developers, it is no surprise that portrayals and perceptions of gender in video games are skewed.Supporting this claim, gender ideology among men, specif ic a ll y highly masculine-identified men,ha s been shown to be strongly tied withsexual orientation—to be a man is to be heterosexual, to be gay is to breach a man’s masculinity, and to question a man’s masculinity is to question his sexuality(Pascoe, 2007; Parrott, 2008; Herek, 1986; Kimmell, 1997). With reference back to the two theories of media consumption, having such a sizeable proportion of game developers as heterosexual men can help to explain why female and LGBTQ game developers felt that diversity of developers translates directly into diversity of the games produced. Homogenization of gender and sexuality

This paragraph pertains to the inequality of the environments and gender bias used in the gaming community.

    1. What did the Affinity Space Teach Me?

Hey Melanie, great presentation. This is the second project I have watched that details interactions on reddit. I am seeing more of the value of that space for community interactions. Where else would I have learned that someone had made a song about factoring trinomials? That’s cool. I always liked math, but that would have made learning it more fun. It is great that you felt like part of the community once you started interacting. You mentioned that new ideas presented themselves through your interactions on the space—I love when that happens. That’s the great thing about these communities, brainstorming anything becomes less of a chore. You are usually able to, at the very least, glean a hint of an idea. You made a comment about how you felt like you didn’t have much to contribute because you don’t have years of experience teaching—I think we all feel, or have felt that way at different points in our lives. I get that feeling every day, but those feelings are usually unwarranted. The positive experience you had with your subreddit is encouraging. I like how you described the idea of games and learning and that we should think about what “game” really means. Awesome work!

    2. reflection

      Hi Melanie,

I enjoyed your presentation! I also used reddit for my AS project. Did you end up getting some good game-related advice? My Dad has his doctorate in mathematics (those skills did not come through for me), but I had this flashback to being in probably 5th or 6th grade when my Dad showed me Donald in Mathmagic Land.

Looking back, this was a somewhat gameful approach considering it came out in '59 and he was using it as a teacher in the early '70s.

Anyways, it's really cool that you took a practical route in searching for your affinity space.

I loved that someone posted their math songs. Were they good? The songs struck me as a sign of a pretty open and nurturing space where a variety of resources can be shared within the community.

It seems like you had a good learning moment where you wanted to contribute. You are an SME, and you have advice as good as any one else on the site. You illustrated the give and take involved in being an active member of an affinity space and contributed to the diversity of thought that existed within the space. The space I joined was dedicated to a video game that I'm not especially good at playing. I was able to ask for advice, but I missed out on the opportunity to contribute knowledge.

      Thanks for sharing!

    1. By now you’ve likely heard of GamerGate, a clutch of internet users whose primary occupation is harassing feminist activists in games and tech and keening about how “SJWs” (social justice warriors) are ruining their favorite media. Last year, in response to an editorial I wrote that was critical of video game culture’s inherent sexism, they swarmed Intel with “consumer complaints” until it pulled advertisements from the site that published it (the chastened tech giant has since committed a generous $300 million to diversity initiatives). The same loosely organized “community” has hounded women from their homes and attempted to silence their talks with threats of mass violence.

This article describes Gamer Gate, a collective of users that harass and intimidate tech companies to defund activist ventures that fight to make the digital world a more tolerable and equal environment.

    1. Nothing about the Internet was broken in 2015

By 2015 the internet was coming under an increased threat from powerful phone and cable companies seeking to favor online content and services that they or their business partners owned, while degrading access to content by competitors. Over the previous decade, there were several documented instances of this abuse.

In response to Pai’s claim the Open Technology Institute issued a release stating: “In 2013 and 2014, the nation’s biggest ISPs—Verizon, AT&T, Comcast, and Time Warner Cable—allowed their networks to become critically congested. Millions of Americans were frustrated by degraded speeds and unusable video connections—and they didn’t know why it was happening. In reality, their ISP was playing a dangerous congestion game to extract new payments from transit networks and edge providers. American internet users were just the collateral damage. For these millions of people, the internet was very much ‘broken.’ The FCC’s rules addressed this problem.”

    1. The video game industry is a multi-billion dollar industry, and most video game designers will usually make a decent amount of money. The median annual salary for a video game designer according the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics is $58,510; $28.13/hr.

The author's purpose here is to show how much money a video game designer makes. I would use this source for information on the salary if I need the support.

    2. Video game design refers to planning, designing, and creating video games. Video game designers will often work closely with other members of a team to create video games for computers and video game consoles. Designing video games is a very specialized and challenging career.

The author's purpose here is to give a quick insight into being a video game designer. I would use this source to quote something if I need to back myself up in an argument or to support my ideas.

    1. Affinity Spaces - MTG: Salvation

      Hello Benjamin,

I enjoyed your affinity space presentation. It is nice that you were able to take an interest you had in Magic: The Gathering and find content and information to support that passion. It would seem the tools for tracking a card's value would be very useful going forward for building on to your decks.

The number of sub-communities you discovered and highlighted within the MTG affinity space was a keen observation. The overall connection to a shared interest in the game brings members to the affinity space, but the freedom, within a digital environment, to branch off and follow interests into the many aspects of MTG keeps the AS engaging for users.

Your post asking for feedback on the tournament deck you created resulted in some very interesting responses. The community offered the responses that you asked for and expected, analysis of the deck with strengths and limitations highlighted. What seemed unexpected was the follow up responses aimed at determining how the deck had fared in physical world competition. Sharing the explicit knowledge of how decks perform gives other members a chance to develop tacit knowledge when designing decks for competitions.

These interactions show how learning in the MTG AS are social, collaborative, and contested. Users first share in the community the decks they are planning, Then other users collaborate on analyzing the suggested deck. Finally when completion results are shared uses develop new thoughts on how to create competitive advantages in future competitions.

The ideas you linked to from Gee and Hayes do a nice job of illustrating learning in the AS

      1. The AS is build focused on a game with design at its core, so users are able to be creative and use the game as a platform to make their own content and take ownership in the game narrative.

      2. The multiple sub-communities give users a chance to fill many different roles in the community, these options make the community engaging for user that want to try out new roles and the users that want to focus on one role.

      3. The sharing of explicit knowledge encourage because with analysis of game play and decks used in competition users can construct their own new strategies and develop tacit knowledge.

Thank you for the share, great presentation,

      Darren

    2. Affinity Spaces - MTG: Salvation

      Hello Ben,

Nice change of pacing for a presentation! I appreciated the fact that it wasn't another video. I don't have much experience with prezi, but it seemed to fit this particular application well!

I had heard of the game Magic before, but only in passing and never had any real experience with it. Your presentation was thorough and I personally liked how it resonated with your learning throughout this course. You were able to make relevant correlations to the semester's knowledge. I like how you narrated the engagement among the community, you broke it down into cataegories and had a great understanding of the flow of information within the community.

Your interpretation of the interaction of the community according to Gee was very accurate and well thoughtout. The community's practice was well documented through the analysis of the discussion and threads, about the topics directly related to the game, as well as, topics indirectly-related such as the price of decks and the speculations surrounding the release of certain materials.

Your knowledge of the course materials was extremely evident throughout your presentation. It seemed that your experience lent itself to a real-world application of affinity spaces, your chosen community provided you with a robust demonstration of what it exactly means to be apart of a great learning community and network of passionate people contibuting to an AS.

Great job! Thanks for sharing your presentation!

    1. Comments

      Hi Melanie,

So glad to see another classmate dive into Reddit, too. Also glad to hear that you had a positive experience with it. The title of your space makes it clear to know who the insiders are - math educators who are also Redditors. Overall your space seems very supportive to all experience levels of math teachers from your personal accounts of your time in the space. It seemed like a safe place to share lesson ideas, ask for help in developing a problem, lesson, or unit, and provide feedback to others seeking information.

At first, I, too, was confused about how a space such as this could help make the connection between games and learning. Your personal revelation helped me to see how a space devoted to math teaching could be considered a part of the game-based learning world. Games don’t necessarily mean educational games. Games can be anything in engaging in the classroom to help certain topics stick. Relating concepts to the outside world makes a game out of the process of learning as students are challenged to use the traits of good learning and gaming to engage with the complex topics.

It seems as though the strengths of your space were tied up within the three features from Gee and Hayes that you mentioned. The fact that your affinity space was not segregated by age allowed all to contribute on equal grounds. You yourself mentioned that you provided advice to another teacher on a topic and it was accepted by the users of the space as they didn’t know your age or teaching status to say otherwise. Everyone could also produce or consume as they wished. Sometimes you need to look at resources, sometimes you need to ask a question, and sometimes you need to provide feedback. All were acceptable in your space and occurred at different times in the space. Also information can be transformed in the space. You cited multiple instances of people using each other’s posts and feedback to modify their instruction or thinking around a task.

Nice job showcasing your space. Do you think you will continue to utilize the space after the conclusion of this project? Did you see any limitations with the space that you would like to change?

    1. Affinity 1

Cool game! I played it on Steam awhile ago, but never took the time to learn all the mechanics. Never knew they had forums! Terraria looks like it supports sandbox learning with with different types of play styles.

What type of profile customization is allowed? What do the titles under username represent? Is this status or can members choose anything? I also wonder how this space compares to the Terraria subreddit. Guild Wars 2 has it's own official forums where the devs are in charged, but i found the Reddit space to be more open.

It's great that in the rules they specify that everyone is equal. Did you see any abuses taking place while your participated? I like your background music by the way!

    2. Hello Mike,

I thought your project had great flow and that the title cards did a wonderful job of keeping concepts organized.

You shared about how the affinity space you joined is run by the company that developed Terraria and that this decision on the part of Re-Logic shows commitment to user/consumers ensuring that they get a fulfilling expericne through interactions with each other and expanding the Terraria narrative. This discussion will help build excitement for new uses by promoting cooperation in creating new ways to play in the sandbox.

Also you pointed out the large membership to the affinity space, 70,000 registered members members, and thousands more guest who visit without signing up. At the time of your presentation there was about a 1:15 ratio of members to guests, if the ratio holds there could be up-to 1,050,000 active guests in this community.

I can see that your first contributions to the community were to illicit information from the seasoned Terraria players. Part of the information your were looking for was the correct places within the affinity space to ask game play questions and find corresponding answers. I think this brings up a good point that there needs to be an understanding that new members in a AS will need support for navigating the space as much as they may need the endeavor based information.

You share many strengths and some weaknesses for the Terraria AS. The strengths included that the community was moderated by game produces driven by their commitment to maintaining positive play experience by users, that the community was safe for all users - with rules and guidelines posted in every forum. The safety of the space, however, leads to one of the glaring limitation in that the safely removes some freedom of expression from the contributions users want to make.

You made three great connections to Gee Hayes:

1 Common endeavor - The game play of Terraria inspires passion in its players and the connection to the AS, through the game producers, gives users, even new players, a place to share their passion. 2 The AS is not segregated by age - Players who become members to the community do not need to share their ages because experience in the game is the central requirement for status in the community. 3 Newbies and experts share space - The forum's posted rules state that all members are there as equals and need to treat each other with respect.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and analysis, Great job!

      Darren

    1. “big game”

I like this idea of "games" but I think it deserves some more careful explanation. Didi and Gogo play games to amuse themselves; the creator of this world/ Godot has invented the characters and scenario to amuse himself -- is that the idea?

    1. Final Affinity Space Presentation

      Hi Darren,

Raiders fan, huh? JK, Go Broncos!

So far, out of all the presentations that I've watched, you've had the most successful post on an AS. Three pages of responses reveals how engaged the community is (or you have made a name for yourself on the site). Either way, nice work.

In regards to the negative poster you encountered--that stinks. He might have been drunk or had a really bad day, or both, and vented on your post when he ran across it. The fact that he didn't continue to comment negatively likely means he realized a flaw in his argument, regretted the comment, or he's simply a jerk that randomly shit posts (sorry for the language, but I think it's the technical term now).

I'm impressed by the willingness of the community members of the space to engage when they directed you to multiple resources for learning materials and references. It sounds like a really cool way to engage students. Some may not be interested in football, though.

It made me think about the Darvasi 2016 article when he discusses the ward game. The teacher made it only 10% of the grade. It was a pretty safe, thoughtful way to test it out. It might be worth trying the same approach when you test the waters using fantasy football as a tool and a way to cover yourself if you're worried that parents might complain about aspects of the approach.

One way to avoid the trolls and give your students an aid in their lessons is to create your own space. You could create a Google + group or a Facebook page and share resources. If you have any relevant connections to share things, tap into those. Maybe it's the football coach at your school.

I really enjoyed your presentation, and I hope that your lesson plans really shine when you decide to implement them in your course.
