The results of the study showed that object control motor skills (such as kicking, catching, and throwing a ball), were better in the children who played interactive games.“This study was not designed to assess whether interactive gaming can actually develop children’s movement skills, but the results are still quite interesting and point to a need to further explore a possible connection,” said Dr. Lisa Barnett, lead researcher on the study.“It could be that these children have higher object control skills because they are playing interactive games that may help to develop these types of skills (for example, the under hand roll through playing the bowling game on the Wii). Playing interactive electronic games may also help eye-hand coordination.”
This is a deductive argument because the logical premise which is that video games can improve motion control skills is supported by a logical premises which is the evidence from Dr. Lisa Barnett. This premises leads to the conclusion that video games can improve motor skills.

Could someone guide me how to set up chromedriver with selenium using chromium flatpak properly? I can't seem to find any tutorial doing it like this... I never had issues with chromedriver using the "old" sudo apt way and I also got it working using snapd. But since I am using Pop!_OS I'd like to just use flatpaks if there is no sudo apt repo.

The issue seems to be that when there are multiple layouts configured, VS Code sets as key layout the first value for layout form setxkbmap -query, ignoring the current layout. If I switch to be en,de then VS Code uses the EN layout, as it is the first in the list. It would be handy if VS Code could use the current layout instead of the first from the list.

Webpacker used to configure Webpack indirectly, which lead to a complicated secondary configuration process. This was done in order to provide default configurations for the most popular frameworks, but ended up creating more complexity than it cured. So now Webpacker delegates all configuration directly to Webpack's default configuration setup.

But it is always important to remember that those are not language concepts. Those are community concepts that only exist in our heads and in the names of some library methods.
I'm not sure about this. I get what he's saying and agree that singleton methods are nothing but a naming convention for the more fundamental/atomic construct called instance methods (which indeed are the only kind of method that exist in Ruby, depending how you look at it), but I think I would actually say that singleton methods are language concepts because those methods like
Object#define_singleton_method
, ... are always available in Ruby (without needing to require a standard library first, for example). In other words, I would argue that something belonging in the Ruby core "library" (?) by definition makes it part of the language -- even if it in turn builds on even lower-level Ruby language features/constructs.

Giving peers permission to engage in dialogue about race and holding a lofty expectation that they will stay engaged in these conversations throughout the semester or year is the first of the four agreements for courageous conversation. While initially, some participants may be eager to enter into these conversations, our experience indicates that the more personal and thus risky these topics get, the more difficult it is for participants to stay committed and engaged." "Many North American music education programs exclude in vast numbers students who do not embody Euroamerican ideals. One way to begin making music education programs more socially just is to make them more inclusive. For that to happen, we need to develop programs that actively take the standpoint of the least advantaged, and work toward a common good that seeks to undermine hierarchies of advantage and disadvantage. And that, inturn, requires the ability to discuss race directly and meaningfully. Such discussions afford valuable opportunities to confront and evaluate the practical consequences of our actions as music educators. It is only through such conversations, Connell argues, that we come to understand “the real relationships and processes that generate advantage and disadvantage”(p. 125). Unfortunately, these are also conversations many white educators find uncomfortable and prefer to avoid."
-
"I am also concerned that despite the best of intentions many of us have not considered adequately what social justice means and entails. I worry that social justice may become simply a “topic du jour” in music education, a phrase easily cited and repeated without careful examination of the assumptions and actions it implicates. That can lead to serious misunderstandings."
Tags
- This is exactly why I'm taking this class. The phrase Social Justice along with Multiculturalism has changed SO MUCH
- Having explicit and concise rules for the conversation is important to create a safe space for more participation in the tougher questions. The facilitator has to be consistently doing this.
- As music educators we do our best to include cultures and introduce new ideas because of what is relevant at the time. Yet we don't go to the next level and dive into the importance of "why" and how we as citizens along with our students can get involved and take positive actions. This may be due to the lack of autonomy in the classroom and/or time to teach in general.

I see a 'virtual attribute' as something we're forced to implement when using frameworks, ORMs and the like. Something that lets us inject our code into the path of whatever metaprogramming has been put in place for us. In a simple PORO like this, I don't see how it has meaning; it's just a method. :)
Hmm, good point. Maybe so. Though I think I'm fine with calling it a virtual property here too.

A relatively comprehensive view of Wouter Groeneveld's commonplacing workflow. There are a few bits missing here and there, but he's got most of the bigger basics down that a majority of people seem to have found and discovered.
He's got a strong concept of indexing, search, and even some review, which many miss. There's some organic work toward combinatorial thought, but only via the search piece.
I should make a list of the important pieces for more advanced versions to have. I've yet to see any articles or work on this.

There’s this thing I simply call “365”. With each new year (or sometimes at the end of a notebook, when I feel like it), I make a 2-page spread mind map of things that kept me busy. It’s more or less an analog tag cloud and it’s extremely rewarding to make. You get to browse through previous journals, look at things you’ve written down and actually managed to pull of, and take note of that in one or two words. That creates a thick cloud full of the things that defined you for the last year. It’s actually quite incredible to look at. When I’m done doing that, I try to underline the words that meant more to me than others. Applying the retrospective principles from software development on your own personal life and writing down what made you glad, mad or sad actually helps you do something about that.
This is an example of spaced repetition being done as retrospective and hiding some of the value of making the important things stand out and reviewing them for better long term retention.

The main difference is in the flow of how messages are ultimately sent to devices for output. The standard library Logger logic converts the log entries to strings and then sends the string to the device to be written to a stream. Lumberjack, on the other hand, sends structured data in the form of a Lumberjack::LogEntry to the device and lets the device worry about how to format it. The reason for this flip is to better support structured data logging. Devices (even ones that write to streams) can format the entire payload including non-string objects and tags however they need to.
-
There is a similar feature in the standard library Logger class, but the implementation here is safe to use with multiple processes writing to the same log file.

John Company offers players a new understanding of British history in the eighteenth and nineteenth century that reflects contemporary scholarship on the subject and extensive research into primary documents. John Company attempts to put the critical events of that time in their proper context and show how the imperial experience transformed the domestic culture of Britain. The East India Company lurked behind every building of a textile mill and every bit of wealth in a Jane Austen novel. John Company is an uncompromising portrait of the people who made the Company and the British Empire what it was. It is as frank as it is cutting in its satire. Accordingly, the game wrestles with many of the key themes of imperialism and globalization in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and how those developments were felt domestically. As such, this game might not be suitable for all players. Please make sure everyone in your group consents to this exploration before playing.

(Ideally the run-time library would treat a pipe in the same way as a console, but it seems that most don't.)
Often/usually treating a pipe/redirect differently is in fact what you want.
Like if you output to a file, you don't necessarily want colors or real-time progress/status outputted along with it: you want just the bare data to be saved, which can then be filtered in useful ways with other standard tools like grep and sed.

In some cases empty can be the simplest replacement for TCL/expect or other similar programming tools because empty:
-
can be easily invoked directly from shell prompt or script
Can't expect / unbuffer / etc. (whatever this is attempting to contrast itself with) be easily invoked directly from shell prompt or script too??
Okay, I guess you have to know more about how
expect
is invoked to understand what they mean. One glance at the examples, comparing them, and all becomes clear:#!/bin/sh empty -f -i in -o out telnet foo.bar.com empty -w -i out -o in "ogin:" "luser\n"
I didn't realize that expect required/expected (no pun intended) to be used in scripts with its own shebang line:
#!/usr/bin/expect spawn telnet foo.bar.com expect ogin {send luser\r}
That does make it less easy/normal to use expect within a shell script.
I was coming to the expect project from/for the
unbuffer
command, which by contrast, is quite easy to include/use in a shell script -- almost the same asempty
, in fact. (Seems like almost a mismatch to haveunbuffer
command inexpect
toolkit then. Or isexpect
command the only odd one out in that toolkit?)

To hear technologists describe it, digital memories are all about surfacing those archival smiles. But they’re also designed to increase engagement, the holy grail for ad-based business models.
It would be far better to have apps focus on better reasons for on this day features. I'd love to have something focused on spaced repetition for building up my memory for other things. Reminders at a week, a month, three months, and six months would be a useful thing for some posts.
-
I still have a photograph of the breakfast I made the morning I ended an eight-year relationship and canceled a wedding. It was an unremarkable breakfast—a fried egg—but it is now digitally fossilized in a floral dish we moved with us when we left New York and headed west. I don’t know why I took the photo, except, well, I do: I had fallen into the reflexive habit of taking photos of everything. Not long ago, the egg popped up as a “memory” in a photo app. The time stamp jolted my actual memory.
Example of unwanted spaced repetition via social media.

Does the fact that it's going off in a different direction imply that it at least starts out connected/related to the original (starting point) subject (as it does in the geometry sense of tangential)? Or does it permit "jumping" to another topic (in another direction) without being related/connected at all??
I don't think I like this definition very much. It doesn't quite fit the sense I'm trying to use it for in my tag:
tangentially related content (aside)
Ah, here's a definition that matches what I thought it meant (one of the senses anyway): https://hyp.is/3Bn2bpZ7Eeu3Ok8vg03AVA/www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/tangential

A lot of this resonates with me. On links, it is often the reason I was interested in it in the first place that's the most important.
The nostalgia factor is very valuable to me, but it also means you need an easy means for not only looking back, but regular reminders to do so.
Owning your stuff: hopefully my stance on this is obvious.
I'm not sure I agree so much with the taxonomy stance. I find it helpful to have it for search and review, the tougher part is doing it consistently with terms that are important to you.

Nevertheless, co-hyponyms are not necessarily incompatible in all senses. A queen and mother are both hyponyms of woman but there is nothing preventing the queen from being a mother.
not necessarily incompatible in all senses.
so is this only a concern/possibility when the word in question is a polyseme?
but there is nothing preventing the queen from being a mother
The meaning of the "incompatibility" relation seems really ambiguous. What does that mean precisely?
And how would we know for sure if an incompatibility (such as a peach is not a plum) or lack of incompatibility (a queen can be a mother and a mother can be a queen) is a sufficient condition to cause it to be or not be a co-hyponym?
Oh. I guess it says
Co-hyponyms are often but not always related to one another by the relation of incompatibility.
so it actually can't ever be used to prove or disprove (sufficient/necessary condition) that something is a co-hyponym. So that observation, while interesting, is not helpful in a practical / deterministic way...
-
It consists of two relations; the first one being exemplified in "An X is a Y" (simple hyponymy) while the second relation is "An X is a kind/type of Y". The second relation is said to be more discriminating and can be classified more specifically under the concept of taxonomy.
So I think what this saying, rather indirectly (from the other direction), if I'm understanding correctly, is that the relationships that can be inferred from looking at a taxonomy are ambiguous, because a taxonomy includes 2 kinds of relationships, but encodes them in the same way (conflates them together as if they were both hyponyms--er, well, this is saying that the are both kinds of hyponyms):
- "An X is a Y" (simple hyponymy)
- "An X is a kind/type of Y".
Actually, I may have read it wrong / misunderstood it... While it's not ruling out that simple hyponymy may sometimes be used in a taxonomy, it is be saying that the "second relation" is "more specifically under the concept of taxonomy" ... which is not really clear, but seems to mean that it is more appropriate / better for use as a criterion in a taxonomy.
Okay, so define "simple hyponymy" and name the other kind of hyponymy that is referenced here.
-
This shows that compatibility may be relevant.
-
A synonym of co-hyponym based on same tier (and not hyponymic) relation is allonym (which means "different name").

semantic domain or semantic field
What, then, is the difference between a semantic domain and a semantic field? The way they are used here, it's almost as if they are listing them in order to emphasis that they are synonyms ... but I'm not sure.
From the later examples of basketball (https://hyp.is/ynKbXI1BEeuEheME3sLYrQ/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semantic_domain) and coffee shop, however, I am pretty certain that semantic domain is quite different from (broader than) semantic field.

(Not answered on this stub article)
What, precisely, is the distinction/difference between a semantic class and a semantic field? At the very least, you would say that they are themselves both very much within the same semantic field.
So, is a semantic class distinct from a semantic field in that semantic class is a more well-defined/clear-cut semantic field? And a semantic field is a more fluid, nebulous, not well-defined field (in the same sense as a magnetic field, which has no distinct boundary whatsoever, only a decay as you move further away from its source) ("semantic fields are constantly flowing into each other")?
If so, could you even say that a semantic class is a kind of (hyponym) of semantic field?
Maybe I should pose this question on a semantics forum.

those aspects of a linguistic unit, such as a morpheme, word, or sentence,
Speaking of ambiguity...
Are the examples in the list "such as a morpheme, word, or sentence" examples of
- aspects of a linguistic unit or of:
- linguistic units themselves ?
Unless you are already fairly familiar with those terms -- in particular, linguistic unit -- it may not be clear.
I believe these are given as examples of "linguistic unit", in order to clarify what we mean by "linguistic unit" — perhaps (ironically) precisely because many people would be unfamiliar with that expression/term.

I don't understand why this isn't being considered a bigger deal by maintainrs/the community. Don't most Rails developers use SCSS? It's included by default in a new Rails app. Along with sprockets 4. I am mystified how anyone is managing to debug CSS in Rails at all these days, that this issue is being ignored makes sprockets seem like abandonware to me, or makes me wonder if nobody else is using sprockets 4, or what!
-
Is there a PR to... something? sassc-rails? That would make the patch not necessary? (I don't know if there's any good way to monkey-patch that in, I think you have to fork? So some change seems required...) Should the defaults be different somehow? This is very difficult to figure out.

What is the point of avoiding the semicolon in concat_javascript_sources
For how detailed and insightful his analysis was -- which didn't elaborate or even touch on his not understanding the reason for adding the semicolon -- it sure appeared like he knew what it was for. Otherwise, the whole issue would/should have been about how he didn't understand that, not on how to keep adding the semicolon but do so in a faster way!
Then again, this comment from 3 months afterwards, indicates he may not think they are even necessary: https://github.com/rails/sprockets/issues/388#issuecomment-252417741
Anyway, just in case he really didn't know, the comment shortly below partly answers the question:
Since the common problem with concatenating JavaScript files is the lack of semicolons, automatically adding one (that, like Sam said, will then be removed by the minifier if it's unnecessary) seems on the surface to be a perfectly fine speed optimization.
This also alludes to the problem: https://github.com/rails/sprockets/issues/388#issuecomment-257312994
But the explicit answer/explanation to this question still remains unspoken: because if you don't add them between concatenated files -- as I discovered just to day -- you will run into this error:
(intermediate value)(...) is not a function at something.source.js:1
, apparently because when it concatenated those 2 files together, it tried to evaluate it as:
({ // other.js })() (function() { // something.js })();
It makes sense that a ; is needed.

While I certainly don’t think that all configuration should be “self hosted” in this kind of way
how is it "self hosted"? in what way?
I think I found the answer here https://github.com/rails/sprockets/blob/master/UPGRADING.md:
One benefit of using a
manifest.js
file for this type of configuration is that now Sprockets is using Sprockets to understand what files need to be generated instead of a non-portable framework-specific interface. So it is "self-hosted" in that Sprockets is using Sprockets itself for this...?

What is the opposite of free content?
The opposite of free/open-source software is proprietary software or non-free software (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proprietary_software).
So should we call the opposite of free content "non-free content"? Or "proprietary content"?
Seems likes either would be fine.

Trailblazer extends the conventional MVC stack in Rails. Keep in mind that adding layers doesn't necessarily mean adding more code and complexity. The opposite is the case: Controller, view and model become lean endpoints for HTTP, rendering and persistence. Redundant code gets eliminated by putting very little application code into the right layer.

-
ActiveInteraction plays nicely with Rails. You can use interactions to handle your business logic instead of models or controllers.
-
Why is all this interaction code better? Two reasons: One, you can reuse the FindAccount interaction in other places, like your API controller or a Resque task. And two, if you want to change how accounts are found, you only have to change one place.
Pretty weak arguments though...
- We could just as easily used a plain object or module to extract this for easy reuse and having it in only one place (avoiding duplication).
-
For this one we'll define a helper method to handle raising the correct errors. We have to do this because calling .run! would raise an ActiveInteraction::InvalidInteractionError instead of an ActiveRecord::RecordNotFound. That means Rails would render a 500 instead of a 404.
True, but why couldn't it handle this for us?

The assert method is used by all the other assertions. It pushes the second parameter to the list of errors if the first parameter evaluates to false or nil.
Seems like these helper functions could be just as easily used in ActiveRecord models. Therefore, they should be in a separate gem, or at least module, that can be used in both these objects and ActiveRecord objects.
