    1. Funnily enough, I've been on an intellectual bent in the other direction: that we've poisoned our thinking in terms of systems, for the worse. This shows up when trying to communicate about the Web, for example.

It's surprisingly difficult to get anyone to conceive of the Web as a medium suited for anything except the "live" behavior exhibited by the systems typically encountered today. (Essentially, thin clients in the form of single-page apps that are useless without a host on the other end for servicing data and computation requests.) The belief/expectation that content providers should be given a pass for producing brittle collections of content that should be considered merely transitory in nature just leads to even more abuse of the medium.

Even actual programs get put into a ruddy state by this sort of thinking. Often, I don't even care about the program itself, so much as I care about the process it's applying, but maintainers make this effectively inextricable from the implementation details of the program itself (what OS version by which vendor does it target, etc.)

    1. ask yourself which tangential questions it brings up. What were you curious about as you wrote it? What aspects of your piece deserve further exploration? Is there a wider issue to look at? Or one single element that could merit a couple of thousand words of its own? For every piece, find at least three new ideas that could be explored as articles. These may be in the form of questions, and only further research will reveal whether or not they can become pieces of their own.

Keep this in mind as a good practice.

    1. “But how can I automate updates to my site’s look and feel?!”

Perversely, the author starts off getting this part wrong!

The correct answer here is to adopt the same mindset used for print, which is to say, "just don't worry about it; the value of doing so is oversold". If a print org changed their layout sometime between 1995 and 2005, did they issue a recall for all extant copies and then run around trying to replace them with ones consistent with the new "visual refresh"? If an error is noticed in print, it's handled by correcting it and issuing another edition.

As Tschichold says of the form of the book (in The Form of the Book):

The work of a book designer differs essentially from that of a graphic artist. While the latter is constantly searching for new means of expression, driven at the very least by his desire for a "personal style", a book designer has to be the loyal and tactful servant of the written word. It is his job to create a manner of presentation whose form neither overshadows nor patronizes the content [... whereas] work of the graphic artist must correspond to the needs of the day

The fact that people publishing to the web regularly do otherwise—and are expected to do otherwise—is a social problem that has nothing to do with the Web standards themselves. In fact, it has been widely lamented for a long time that with the figurative death of HTML frames, you can no longer update something in one place and have it spread to the entire experience using plain ol' HTML without resorting to a templating engine. It's only recently (with Web Components, etc.) that this has begun to change. (You can update the style and achieve consistency on a static site without the use of a static site generator—where every asset can be handcrafted, without a templating engine.) But it shouldn't need to change; the fixity is a strength.

As Tschichold goes on to say of the "perfect" design of the book, "methods and rules upon which it is impossible to improve have been developed over centuries". Creators publishing on the web would do well to observe, understand, and work similarly.

    1. Some of the best customers of such a service will be academics.

Indeed. Web literacy among the masses is pitifully low. Browsermakers are certainly to blame for being poor stewards. Hot Valley startups are responsible as well. (See https://quoteinvestigator.com/2017/11/30/salary/.)

    1. I miss the thriving blogging culture of circa 1999-2012. People blogged before and after those dates, but that was a period where blogging really had an outsized voice in shaping political and cultural conversation.

Maybe it's the fact that there's more thoughts, ideas, and actual conversation in longer form media? Too much has moved to social media which really immediately implies small, bite-sized bits of information---a short note, a photo, a star or a heart.

Related to Victor's Dynamicland project, as well as his thoughts on a "dynamic medium. A note about “The Humane Representation of Thought.” Worrydream. http://worrydream.com/TheHumaneRepresentationOfThought/note.html )".

    1. Glad to have you back Ben!

Interesting to hear the results of the experiment. Knowing that it only made you $10 on their platform is an interesting data point.

I can't wait to see what you come up with on the community front. Healthier competitors to Facebook's pages/communities is a problem we need more work on.

    1. Substack, viewed as a blogging platform, is a lot like Medium — a would-be walled garden, though run by less unscrupulous folks than own the big social-media platforms. I’m temperamentally suspicious of them, as I am of any platform that is, ultimately, subject to the whim of a proprietor. So although I use both Medium and Substack, everything I write therein is also published verbatim on my ‘live’ blog, which is completely under my control, and for whose hosting I pay with my own money. For me, Substack provided merely a convenient and reliable way of sending out the email version of what really matters — the live blog on the open Web. Both Substack and Medium have fairly honourable business models and have facilities whereby writers can get paid, if they wish to be. (I don’t.) And that’s a good thing (though it leads to the power-law outcome that Greer mentions). But it also has the downside in terms of the public sphere that, ultimately, their writing exists mainly inside a walled, members-only, garden. A genteel garden, but still a private garden. That’s why I’ve always followed Dave Winer’s lead: write wherever you like, but always make sure your stuff is also published on the Web.

    1. Boiled down, Medium is simply marketing in the service of more marketing. It is not a “place for ideas.” It is a place for advertisers. It is, therefore, utterly superfluous.

    1. This is twitter. What is its purpose? It is a general-purpose electronic communication medium on the Internet, accessible via web and apps, comprising a high-volume global stream of written thoughts of people, attached with pics, gifs, links and audio- & video-embeds.

    1. While we believe that the Medium platform and network provide incredible advantages for writers, we also believe that our platform should inherit the power and creativity of the open web, not be walled off from it.

They haven't generally taken this stance before. They've spent a lot of time and effort to specifically wall themselves away from the rest of the web. They've even taken away the ability to bring your own domain to the product. This seems like just too much lip service.

    2. We know how important it is for creators to be able to not just make a space on the internet for their work, but to make their own space, to create context and a sense of place, and to establish their personal brands.

How many years has it taken them to realize this?

    1. Our everyday media - and our proclivity for relationship as mediated by retweets, likes, reactions, and snaps - is all the more social because of annotated commentary.

Perhaps deeper than you want to go, but I'm curious about your thoughts on Medium's UI that allows in line commentary/comments/reactions (which are also given their own separate URL's which don't include all of their context) versus other platforms that would simply include those as comments at the bottom.

We use best raw materials to manufacture power cables and are approved by major approving bodies and leading consultants. They have been fully type tested as per applicable IS and IEC standards.

    1. Pescovitz and his collaborators called Sony about them, and an archivist eventually found the tapes sitting in an underground, climate-controlled warehouse in western Pennsylvania.

This relates to what we have been doing in class and using research and the help of archivists to find materials. This was also mentioned in the linguistic metadata in the subtitle of the page and provides more information. The original tapes were not touched for over 40 years and sat in a warehouse. Seems to be a little selfish to me.

    2. CD-ROM in 1992, and about two years ago NASA uploaded the nature sounds and greetings on SoundCloud, without the music. The lack of a vinyl version, even in the days of digital, seemed like a missed opportunity.

This passage shows an example of multiple mediums of aural communication. This record was actually already released on CD and then partially released onto a website and app called Soundcloud 2 years ago. It is just now being released onto vinyl. These are 3 different mediums of aural communication that are targeted for different audiences. Vinyls are more for the baby boomer generation and modern hipsters like me, Soundcloud is for the millennials and CD-ROM are for the generation before them. This would mean that each generation wanted to hear this record and the producers wanted everyone to hear it as well.

    1. That future is not given, but depends on the medium the group is imagining. It thus depends on the properties of the medium that the group is exploring, selecting, and practicing. On the one hand, technology enables a new medium, which is imagined as shaping the future, on the other hand the future is imagined as shaping the new medium, which then should drive technology.

This relationship between imagined futures and how they mold the medium, leave out the bridged with the present. If history with Kay's group repeats, what fills the gap between the prototypes of the present and the imagined future, is a form of dystopia.

Esta relación entre los futuros imaginados y cómo moldean el medio deja por fuera los puentes con el presente. Si la historia con el grupo de Kay se repite, lo que llena la brecha entre el presente de los prototipos y el futuro imaginado es una forma de distopia.

    2. Computing is to take the role of an infrastructure: much as books need light, but are not modeled after the light’s logic, the medium might draw, where necessary, on the computing possibilities provided by the OS in the background, but it should not be driven by them. Instead, the dynamic spatial medium should be driven by properties of the medium itself, and as such, it should drive technology.

    1. If I have a number of ways of expressing and shaping my message, then the questions that confront me are: which mode is best, most apt, for the content / meaning I wish to communicate? Which mode most appeals to the audience whom I intend to address? Which mode most corresponds to my own interest at this point in shaping the message for communication? Which medium is preferred by my audience? Or by me? How am I positioning myself if I choose this medium or this mode rather than those others

    1. Thus was born Your human personality, and since its birth have I impelled You to nourish, support and strengthen it, by filling You with longings, hopes, ambitions, and aspirations, withall the various manifestations of Desire; which are but the human phases of My Will, operatingin the preparation and development of a medium capable of expressing perfectly My Attributeson Earth

The human journey has been one of being strengthened by longings, hopes, ambitions, aspirations and manifestations so as to develop a vehicle capable of expressing God here on Earth.

    2. This, then, was the first condition into which You awakened when You entered into Earthexpression, and is what is called the Edenic state or dwelling in the Garden of Eden. This Edenic state represents the Celestial phase of Impersonal Consciousness, or that state inwhich You were still consciously One with Me, though now confined in a mortal medium ofexpression

In the beginning even though in body mind, the human expression was still consciously solely guided by God.

    3. Thus were now manifest all the various mediums for the Earth expression of My Idea; and You,being one of My Attributes, naturally had dominion over all of these mediums, or possessed thepower of utilizing any or all of them, if necessary, for the full and complete expression of Your --My Attributes -- powers and possibilities. In this manner and for this reason alone did You and Your Brothers and Sisters come into humanexpression. While in human form yet Your expression was so entirely Impersonal, that, thoughself-conscious, you still looked wholly to Me within for inspiration and guidance
    4. So it was then that the first tendency to think yourself as separate from Me was born. Thecomplete consciousness of separation did not become established until long after. In the beginning, when You thus first entered into Earth expression, obeying the impulse I hadsent forth through My concentrated Thought, You, one of My Attributes, surrounded or clothedYour Self with My Idea of My Self in expression as the particular Attribute You represented. You being the animating Force of that Idea.In other words, My Idea of My Self expressing that particular Attribute then became the Soul ofYour particular expression. But that Idea or Soul is not You, remember, for You are really a partof Me, being My Self in expression through the medium of that particular Attribute.Having clothed Your Self with My Idea, this Idea then, through the necessity of Its be-ing,immediately began to attract to Itself the necessary Thought Substance requisite for theexpression of that particular Attribute, and to build and shape it into My Image and Likeness. Itthus became a Holy Temple, filled with My living Presence, because inhabited by You, one ofMy Divine Attributes

First there was a tendency to think as being separate, however the consciousness of separation did not occur until later.... First entered the realm of Earth, one of Gods attributes.... Then became a particular expression and this attracted to itself "the necessary Thought Substance requisite for the expression of that particular Attribute, and to build and shape it into My Image and Likeness. It thus became a Holy Temple, filled with My living Presence, because inhabited by You, one of My Divine Attribute."

    5. But there yet remained the final and culminating medium of expression.Up to this point, while each perfectly expressed some phase of My Nature, yet all existingmediums and avenues were unconscious of Me, and were mediums of expression only as a wireis a medium for conducting heat, light and power. The conditions were ripe, however, for the creation of mediums through which My DivineAttributes could find conscious expression, conscious not only of their relationship to Me, but oftheir ability and power to express My Idea.It was at this moment in Time that You and Your Brothers and Sisters were born into existenceas human expressions, coming into manifestation as you did, similarly with all other mediums, inresponse to My concentrated Thought, in which I saw all the infinite variety of My Attributes inactual expression in entitized forms, each manifesting in predominance some particular phase ofMy Being, and each conscious of Me, Its Creator and Expressor

Humanity was birthed so God could have mediums that can express God consciously...

    6. The next stage was the developing and preparing of avenues or mediums through which I couldexpress the manifold phases, possibilities and powers of My Idea. The outward evidence of this was what is known as the mineral, vegetable and animal kingdoms, which, each in turn, as it came into manifestation, gradually unfolded higher and more complexstates of consciousness that enabled Me more and more clearly to express the infinite phases andvariety of My Nature. It was at this stage that I looked upon My Creation, as stated in My other Revelation, and sawthat It was good

The preparation of mediums to express God.......

    7. In the beginning, at the dawn of a new Cosmic Day, when the Word consciousness was justawakening and the stillness of Cosmic Night yet prevailed, I The THINKER, conceived MyIdea. This My Idea of My Self in manifestation in a new condition, called Earth expression, I sawcompletely pictured in the mirror of My Omniscient Mind. In this mirror I saw the real Earthshining forth brilliantly in the Cosmos, -- a perfect Sphere, where all the Infinite phases, attributes and powers of My Divine Nature were finding perfect expression through the mediumof Angels of Light, living Messengers of My Will, My Word in the Flesh, even as It is in theCelestial World of the Eternal.I saw My Self manifesting outwardly as Nature, and My Life as the vivifying and evolvingPrinciple back of all Manifestation. I saw Love, the Divine Creative Power, as the animating andvitalizing Force back of all Life, and My Desire to give perfect expression to that Love as thePotential and Real Cause and Reason of the birth of My Idea. All this I saw mirrored in My All-seeing and All-knowing Mind, which could see and reflectonly the Soul of things or their Reality. Therefore this that I saw pictured in My Mind was theReal Earth, in fact, its beginning, its conception into Cosmic being

      Gods inspiration .................

    8. Just so will I develop and unfold all My mediums of expression, which shall finally, unitedly andcompletely picture forth My Idea from out their souls, in all the glory of Its perfection. At present these mediums are of such nature that they require many languages of many types, from the simplest to the most complex, composed of almost an infinite number of Words, toexpress My Idea. But when I shall have completely thought out My Idea, or shall have perfected My manymediums of expression, then shall My Idea shine forth in every Word, each, in fact, being aperfect part or phase of My Idea, all so chosen and arranged that they will really be as one Word, radiating the sublime significance of My Meaning. Then shall all languages have melted, merged, into one language, and all words into One Word;for all mediums shall have become One flesh, the now perfected medium for the completeexpression in One Word of My Idea, -- My SELF.Then shall My SELF, now capable of being expressed by these perfected Words, shine throughIts medium of expression, -- through the personalities, their bodies, minds and intellects; and theWord shall have become flesh, or shall BE the flesh

I am being fashioned, as is everyone else to be clear conduits for the expression of Substance, the expression of the inspirations of God..............

This is cool, I may have somehow missed the fact that annotations on an entire page could be made public like that. This was really useful for showing me the power of Hypothesis in a way that made sense (the comparison to Medium is dead on and resonates given the similarities in the workflow).
