Case: M, Age Unknown, Ethnicity Unknown

      DiseaseAssertion: VHL

FamilyInfo: The patient had significant family history. His mother refused genetic testing but presented with bilateral pohechromocytoma. His father was found to have the same VHL mutation. One of his siblings (patient II,3) was unaffected, while another (patient II,2) was found to have the mutation and presented with bilateral pheochromocytoma. His sibling (patient II,1) passed during childbirth with symptoms and signs of a hypertensive crisis with the autopsy showing a left adrenal and extraadrenal pheochromocytoma. However, cause of death was a cerebral hemorrhage. His half sister (patient II,5) also had the same VHL mutation and presented with bilateral pheochromocytoma. Refer to figure 1 for family pedigree.

CaseHPOFreeText: The 66Y male patient presented with mild dementia, and was found to have multiple tumours in the cerebellum; the tumours were resected, and histological examination determined that the tumours included meningothelial meningioma and a capillary hemangioblastoma. The patient was also found to have renal cell carcinoma, and underwent nephrectomy. The patient had also previously undergone resection for a giant pheochromocytoma associated with malignant hypertension 20 years prior at 46Y. The patient died of multiple cerebral infarctions and RCC three years after the surgery to remove the cerebellar tumours.

Her brother had a monolateral benign pheochromocytoma. The proband also had a melanoma and bilateral renal cysts. A VHL sequence variant IVS2 +43 A>G was found in this case and also in one other unrelated sporadic pheochromocytoma. Their VHL mRNA integrity is currently being assessed. The proband had no cerebellar or spinal NMR finding or retinal alterations. Molecular analysis showed the following sequence variants: VHL IVS2 +43 A>G, RET c.2071 G>A p.G691S, SDHD c.34 G>A p.G12S, IVS2-29 A>G, c.204 C>T p.S68S, and IVS3-32 T>C.

    1. A 3 year-old girl was admitted in the Department of Pediatric Oncology following several months history of febrile episodes, sweating and irritability. Symptoms were first interpreted as being of infectious causes, and that is why she received repeated antibiotic therapies. There was no improvement, and that is why more investigations were performed. An abdominal ultrasound performed in a pediatric hospital revealed a right adrenal tumor mass that prompted the transfer to our unit.Family history: the patient’s mother aged 38 was diagnosed with bilateral pheochromocytoma resected when she was the age of 18 years. She presented several relapses, the most recent one at the age of 32, when she was also diagnosed with cerebral angioma. Genetic testing revealed the presence of the VHL c 244 C>G (p. Arg 82 Gly) heterozygote mutation, while the tests for RET, SDHB, SDHC and SDHD were negative. The clinical examination of our patient revealed: pallor, paroxysmal febrile episodes with irritability and sweating, tachycardia (130/min), hypertension (170/126 mmHg). There was no palpable abdominal mass.Abdominal ultrasound: well delimited tumor of the right adrenal gland, 37/34/35 mm in diameter, irregular with transonic inclusions.Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): right adrenal tumor, 35/42/43 mm in diameter, well delimited, irregular, with marked heterogenous contrast intake, presenting cystic and necrotic areas (Figure 1).Open in a separate windowFigure 1Right adrenal tumor.Serum markers: urinary vanillylmandelic acid (VMA) 31.1 mg/24 h (normal <6.6), neuron specific enolase (NSE) 59.79 ng/ml (normal <17), ferritin 306.6 ng/ml (normal range 6–67), lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) 333 IU/L (normal range 125–300).Genetic examination: VHL c 244 C>G (p. Arg 82 Gly) heterozygotic mutation.Management: Complete surgical resection was performed with special precautions, but it was uneventful and blood pressure instantly dropped to normal.Go to:PathologyMacroscopic encapsuled 40/40/30 mm tumor, delimited by a bright yellow rim. The tumor is nodular with small hemorrhagic and necrotic areas.Microscopy: adrenal gland is compressed by a well delimited tumor made by cell nests of variable dimensions, separated by a reduced vascular connective stroma (Zellballen), with relatively numerous mitoses (8/10 High Power Field - HPF), most of them typical, very few atypical, extensive necrosis and vascular invasion. The aspect is suggestive for a malignant pheochromocytoma with Pheochromocytoma of the Adrenal gland Scaled Score (PASS) score 7: vascular invasion (1), necrosis (2), mitoses (2) (Figure 2).Open in a separate windowFigure 2Example of light microscopy image of sections from the excised tumor showing characteristics of malignant pheochromocytoma (Zellballen with central necrosis), hematoxylin eosin (HE) stain (10X).Go to:OutcomeAfter 6 months of follow-up, the patient is without any clinical symptoms, with normal blood pressure, no tumor markers, no evidence of tumor on cerebral and abdominal MRI and a normal ophthalmoscopy.

    1. The genetic testing revealed the presence of NF1 germline mutation (c.3516_3517delTC, p.D1172DfsX21). However, while the genetic analysis of the RET proto-oncogene did not reveal any mutation, the screening of the VHL gene revealed the presence of a so far undescribed missense variant (c.788 C>G, p.Pro192Arg). Both variants were present in the mother and absent in the healthy son.

    1. Case report: We present a case of a compound heterozygote patient with von Hippel-Lindau disease and familial erythrocytosis type 2. One of the mutations found in our patient, c.416C>G (p.Ser139Cys) of the VHL gene, has not been previously reported. This case is the second one reported where von Hippel-Lindau disease and familial erythrocytosis type 2 coexist in the same individual.

      PatientID: Case

      Case: M, 9Y5M, Ethnicity Unknown

      DiseaseAssertion: VHL

FamilyInfo: This patient has a large family history of VHL disease (4 generations). 12 other members are reported in Fig 1. as having VHLd although their genotyping is not availably discussed. Only the proband’s mother was said to have the disease and the Exon 3 deletion, passing away due to complications of a hemangioblastoma in the CNS.

      CasePresentingHPOs: HP:0030424 (Epididymal cyst)

CaseHPOFreeText: This is a pediatric patient with both familial erythrocytosis type 2 and VHL disease. First diagnosed with polyglobulia (polycythemia) at 8Y. A physical examination showed a tumor in the right testicle (cyst in the right epididymis)

      CaseNotHPOs: N/A

CaseNotHPOFreeText: Several studies were conducted, such as venous blood gas, lung VQ scan, echocardiogram, cardiac catheterization, bone marrow aspirate, bone biopsy, respiratory function analysis, and ocular fundus study, all of which were reported as normal.

FamilyInfo: This proband had a 5-year-old asymptomatic son who carried the same mutation. The proband's brother (F1-II-3) was a 30 year-old who presented with multiple right renal masses, epididymal nodules and multiple pancreatic cysts. Histopathological analysis revealed right renal cell carcinoma with hemorrhagic cyst

CasePresentingHPOs: HP:0002666, HP:0005584, HP:0009715 (pheochromocytoma, renal cell carcinoma, Papillary cystadenoma of the epididymis)

CaseHPOFreeText: Ultrasound (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans confirmed single masses, multiple tumors and multiple cysts in the right adrenal glands, bilateral kidney and pancreas, respectively. Right pheochromocytoma and multiple right renal cell carcinomas were confirmed by histopathological examination. In 2012, the patient was diagnosed with bilateral epididymal head multiple nodules. Bilateral epididymal tubercle resection was performed and epididymal papillary adenoma was confirmed by histopathological examination.

    1. Molecular screening of 980 cases of suspected hereditary optic neuropathy with a report on 77 novel OPA1 mutations

      PMID:

      Gene: OPA1

      Disease: hereditary optic neuropathy

980 patients in this study with suspected hereditary optic neuropathies were evaluated by searching for the ten primary LHON-causing mtDNA mutations and examining the entire coding sequences of the OPA1 and OPA3 genes. 295 had variants in OPA1; however the exact count for this variant was not provided and neither was any additional phenotypic information.

    1. Indeed, in contrast to fibroblasts bearing the I382M mutation, which displayed mild mitochondrial network fragmentation, fibroblasts with the p.R445H and p.S545R mutations were marked by the disappearance of filamentous mitochondria in favour of fragmented and punctuated mitochondria (patients 1–3) (Fig. (Fig.2B2B and Fig. S1). Quantification of the ratio of mitochondrial to cellular volume showed a 20% decrease of mitochondrial content in fibroblasts with the dominant‐negative p.R445H and p.S545R mutations (patients 1–3), compared to control fibroblasts, whereas no significant loss of mitochondrial volume was observed in the haploinsufficient OPA1 mutated fibroblasts (patients 4–7) (Fig. (Fig.2C).2C).

Cultured patient fibroblasts showed disappearance of filamentous mitochondria in favor of fragmented and punctuated mitochondria and a 20% decrease of mitochondrial content in fibroblasts.

    1. A 20-year-old Caucasian woman presented to our institution with decreased vision in the right eye (RE) with a 4-month evolution. The patient’s vital signs were within normal limits, and no abnormalities were noticed upon physical and neurological examination. Similarly, her past medical history was unremarkable. Her best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 50 ETDRS (Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study) letters in the RE and 84 ETDRS letters in the left eye. Her intraocular pressure (IOP) was normal in both eyes, and the result of her anterior segment examination was unremarkable. Upon ophthalmoscopic examination, a red-colored globular lesion of 3 disk diameters (DDs) with prominent feeder vessels was noticed in the superior temporal region of the retina in the RE (Fig. 1). The fellow eye was normal on fundus examination, and no other lesions were found in the posterior pole or periphery. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) was carried out using the DRI OCT Triton™ SS-OCT device (Topcon Medical, Tokyo, Japan).

    1. While the Q785R mutation presented normal mtDNA and partially affected mitochondrial morphology, similar to the D603H mutation, the S545R mutation had an intermediate behavior, borderline across phenotypes. Indeed, the complete fragmentation of the mitochondrial network was associated with only a slight, non-significant reduction of mtDNA amount, supporting a borderline nature of this variant, causing either DOA or DOA “plus” possibly depending on modulation of other genetic and/or environmental modifiers. MEFs analysis suggests that a complete fragmentation of the mitochondrial network, in association with mtDNA depletion, hallmarks the DOA “plus” phenotype, whereas if these two parameters are mildly affected the final outcome is expected to be pure DOA. This hypothesis is represented in the scheme of Fig. 10.

Expression of the Ser600Arg variant in OPA1-null mouse embryonic fibroblasts showed complete fragmentation of the mitochondrial network and a slight, non-significant reduction of mtDNA amount indicating that this variant impacts protein function (PMID: 30293569)(PS3_Supporting).

    1. In a family with VHL, we identified a novel missense mutation (N78D), which affects a fully conserved residue in the VHL protein. Interestingly, several other missense mutations reported at same codon in the VHL protein that might be associated with a low risk of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) but not pheochromocytoma appear to be associated with a VHL type 1 phenotype. At the moment, RCC is present in none of the affected mutation carriers in the family described here. In contrast to other missense changes at codon 78, the change in our VHL family is predicted to have a mild effect on VHL function, which apparently is insufficient to cause predisposition to RCC.

    1. Patient 2 The second patient had a familial history of VHL disease but had never been screened for central nervous system manifestations when she experienced a sudden left hearing loss at 18 years old. The MRI revealed a left mass of the temporal bone invading the otic capsule but without extension in the cerebellopontine angle (Fig. 1) and also a cystic hemangioblastoma of the brainstem with significant mass burden but no associated symptoms. It was decided to operate on the hemangioblastoma first due to its size and location and the endolymphatic sac tumor remained under surveillance. The MTD of the endolymphatic sac tumor at diagnosis was 1.9 cm. Apart from central nervous systems hemangioblastomas, the patient developed pancreatic cysts in the course of her VHL disease. The germline mutation of the VHL gene was also identified (c.345C>G, p.His115Gln). During 18 years of surveillance, the tumor increased in size following a two-phase growth pattern alternating phases of quiescence and phases of continuous growth (Fig. 2). Apart from her left cophosis, she did not suffer from any vestibular symptoms and the rest of her neurological exam remained normal. As tumor did not develop in the cerebellopontine angle and did not threaten the brainstem, it was decided to postpone surgery and the patient remains under surveillance.

    1. A 15-year-old male with isolated left-sided hearing loss for more than 3 months was referred to the department of otorhinolaryngology with the suspected diagnosis of cholesteatoma. A computed tomography (CT) scan of the temporal bone, showing osseous destructions in the area of the jugular foramen but relatively little affection of the middle ear, had been performed prior to referral (Fig. 1). The patient had no vertigo, pain, or otorrhea, and the auditory canal and tympanic membrane appeared normal. For further evaluation, pure-tone audiometry showing a 40 to 75 dB conductive hearing loss over all frequencies, tympanometry showing a flat curve, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the temporal bone were performed. The first MRI images showed a lesion with polycyclic borders and osseo-destructive components in the left temporal bone.

MRI showed a highly enhancing mass in the left temporal bone in the region of the jugular foramen, that measured 3.4 × 2.3 × 3.3 cm and exhibited a salt and pepper pattern in some areas. Definite histology confirmed ELST, and because a radical resection could not be guaranteed due to the highly infiltrative growth of the tumor, postoperative stereotactic radiation was initiated. The patient also had angiomatous lesions of the nasal and pharyngeal mucosa.

    1. II:5. A 66-year-old woman had had visual impairment since childhood and had attended a special school for the blind. She presented with a further slowly progressive deterioration in her visual acuity, a progressive gait disturbance of 20 years duration, and a 5-year history of deteriorating hearing. Shortly after presentation she developed acute paranoid delusions, low mood and visual hallucinations which resolved spontaneously. On examination, she was just able to perceive light and had bilateral optic atrophy. There was a complete external ophthalmoplegia, bilateral ptosis and bifacial weakness. Her gait was ataxic, tendon reflexes depressed and plantar responses flexor. Clinical investigations revealed an elevated serum creatine kinase (417 U/l, normal <190 U/l) with a normal fasting blood glucose and lactate. An electrocardiogram showed left axis deviation but an echocardiogram was normal. A chest X-ray and pulmonary function tests were normal. An EEG revealed evidence of a mild cortical disturbance. Brain MRI revealed mild cortical and cerebellar atrophy, and prominent small-vessel ischaemic lesions in the cerebral white matter bilaterally.

    1. The impact of the substitutions in exon 3’s last nucleotide (position c.550) on splicing was previously functionally evaluated using RNA analysis and was established as pathogenic [75]. In the same splice site, we detected a novel variant, c.550 + 3A > C, in a patient P02201 and as the variant had not been previously reported, we tried to functionally evaluate it. Unfortunately, none of the patient’s family members were available for testing. The variant potentially affecting the donor splice site (5'ss) of exon 3 was analyzed in silico by MaxEnt Score [76], and the ratio between mutated and wild-type 5'ss sequence was 0.41—a number suggesting a substantial effect on splicing. According to Le Guédard-Méreuze et al. [77], substitution + 3A > C is prone to cause a splicing defect even if the donor splice site does not contain any further nucleotide changes. We performed minigene analysis (detailed procedure described in Supplement Methods) to confirm the deleterious effect on splicing and it showed aberrant splicing in nearly 100% of mutated minigene construct transcripts (Fig. 3).Fig. 3Minigene splicing analysis of a novel variant c.550 + 3A > C. The wild-type and mutant genomic fragments of SERPING1 comprising exon 3 and flanking upstream (229 bp) and downstream (255 bp) intron sequences, were cloned into pET01 vector and HepG2 cells were transfected with these minigenes. Capillary electrophoresis of RT-PCR products showed aberrant splicing in nearly 100% of mutated minigene construct transcripts. Several different aberrant transcripts were detected. The most abundant was intron 3 retention followed by exon 3 skipping. Transcripts using cryptic donor splice sites − 10 and + 27 were found in the mutant minigene analysis, whereas they were not detected in the wild type at all. a Minigene analysis results: column A shows transcript proportions resulting from control minigene construct representing c.550 + 3A; column C shows transcript proportions resulting from minigene construct representing c.550 + 3C. b Scheme of the transcripts detected in the minigene analysis. c Scheme of the pET minigene construct. Cryptic splice sites found in the analysis and their exact sequences are displayed. MaxEnt Score values (MES) are specified beneath each splice siteFull size imageVariant c.686-7C > G was detected in a mother and her daughter (P03001-P03002), both affected with HAE symptoms. This variant had been described before [7], but its impact had not been yet fully evaluated. Therefore, we extracted RNA from both patients’ blood and analyzed samples by RT-PCR and fragment analysis (Supplementary Methods), which showed complete impairment caused by the variant (Fig. 4).Fig. 4mRNA analysis of patients carrying variant c.686-7C > G. Capillary electrophoresis was performed on PCR products amplified by primers annealing to exons 4 and 7. a Healthy control shows only one wild type peak. b Both patient sample results show 2 peaks—reference transcript peak and a peak corresponding to a 6 bp longer transcript using a de novo created acceptor splice site. Aberrant and normal transcript proportion was roughly equal, which corresponds to complete impairment caused by the variant. The variant preserves a reading frame and leads to incorporation of additional two amino acids (proline-alanine) into the polypeptide chain

550+3A>C: Minigene analysis showed aberrant splicing in nearly 100% of mutated minigene construct transcripts, confirmed exon 3 splicing disruption

Skin fibroblasts from patients with dominant mutations: MFN2:p.R94Q, OPA1:p.S545R and OPA1:p.R733X, show altered organization of the mitochondrial networks. (A) Representative images of controls and fibroblasts with OPA1:p.S545R and MFN2:p.R94Q mutations. Individual mitochondrial tubules are shown distinctively coloured. (B) Histograms indicate the number of individual mitochondrial tubules per total mitochondrial length; (C) the number of network branch points per total mitochondrial length; (D) the mitochondrial volume per cellular volume (convex hull algorithm); (E) and the bar diagram shows the distribution of mitochondrial lengths. Values of mutated skin fibroblasts are the mean ± s.d. of at least 40 measurements from two independent acquisitions. Control values are the mean ± s.d. of at least 160 measurements (X, XL or XXL cell size) from four healthy control cell lines. *P < 0.01, **P < 0.001, Mann–Whitney U-test. Scale bar: 10 μm.Dominant OPA1 mutations are associated with fragmented mitochondrial networks in fibroblasts from ADOA patients (Amati-Bonneau et al., 2005), and in HeLa cells transfected with OPA1 mutants (Olichon et al., 2007) but no reduction of mitochondrial volume has been described. In our study, the OPA1:p.S545R and OPA1:p.R733X mutations were associated with a higher ratio of individual mitochondrial tubules to total mitochondrial length (Fig. 3B). Unconnected mitochondria consisted of small tubular structures (Fig. 3E) with few dichotomous branches and a small number of connection points (Fig. 3C). Significantly, mitochondrial fragmentation in the OPA1:p.S545R cells was associated with a 20.5% reduction of mitochondrial volume compared to controls (P < 0.001; Mann–Whitney U-test) (Fig. 3D). The mitochondrial fragmentation observed in OPA1:p.R733X cells did not affect the total mitochondrial volume since the length of each individual tubule in these cells is longer than in OPA1:p.S545R cells. This fragmentation was associated with a disorganization of the mitochondrial network that did not affect cell size or shape. Interestingly, in OPA1:p.S545R cells, most mitochondrial tubular structures were found close to the MTOC (Fig. 3, Fig. 4) whereas isolated mitochondria were mainly found in the three extension arms of the triangular cell and around the nucleus. It would have been interesting to perform a statistical analysis of the variation of mitochondrial volume according to the various cell regions but the precise definition of these subregions for automatic anaylsis presented considerable difficulties. However, our visual analysis indicated that each region of the cell – central, perinuclear, and periplasmic – was equally affected by the reduction of mitochondrial volume in OPA1:p.S545R cells.Download : Download high-res image (848KB)Download : Download full-size imageFig. 4. (B) Mitochondrial network fragmentation induced by CCCP 10 μM 24 h. (C1–4) In OPA1:p.S545R fibroblasts, the major portion of the mitochondrial network was fragmented except for mitochondria emerging from the MTOC (white spots are supposed to indicate the position the MTOC). Representative images of at least 160 cells (X, XL or XXL cell size) from three control cell lines, acquired in two independent times. Scale bars: 10 μm.We noted that no tubular structures were preserved when mitochondrial fragmentation was induced by the mitochondrial uncoupler CCCP (Fig. 4B) or by siRNA OPA1 (supplementary material Fig. S4B).The expression of the GTPase-domain mutant of MFN2 (MFN2:p.K109T) in HeLa cells was shown to induce mitochondrial fragmentation (Detmer and Chan, 2007). However, standard fluorescent imaging revealed no mitochondrial network defects in heterozygous MFN2 CMT2A fibroblasts (Loiseau et al., 2007, Amiott et al., 2008). In contrast, our standardized technique of mitochondrial imaging showed that the missense mutation MFN2:p.R94Q induced mitochondrial biogenesis and the over-fusion of mitochondria. Reticulated mitochondria were distributed all over the cell (Fig. 3A) with a 24% higher number of mitochondrial network branch points compared to controls (P < 0.01; Mann–Whitney U-test) (Fig. 3C) and a 14.8% increase of mitochondrial content per cell compared to controls (P < 0.01; Mann–Whitney U-test) (Fig. 3D).In contrast to the mitochondrial fragmentation observed after neuroblastoma cell lines were transfected with GDAP1 mutants (Niemann et al., 2009), no alterations in mitochondrial network morphology were found in fibroblasts with the GDAP1:p.R120W mutation (Fig. 3).

Cultured fibroblasts from patients show that this variant results in altered organization of the mitochondrial network including a 20.5% reduction in mitochondrial volume compared to controls, a higher ratio of individual mitochondrial tubules to total mitochondrial length, unconnected mitochondria that consisted of small tubular structures (Fig. 3E) with few dichotomous branches and a small number of connection points, and fragmentation of the mitochondrial network (Fig. 4).

    1. reply to u/Typed_Anew at https://old.reddit.com/r/typewriters/comments/1ug4q1i/any_information_on_thisa_repair_question/

There don't appear to be any examples in the typewriter database, so be sure to create an account and upload the data and photos you've got. https://typewriterdatabase.com/register-today.php (It's not every day someone gets to upload a new make/model!)

Similar machines and details: - Gundka https://typewriterdatabase.com/no_info.414.typewriter-serial-number-database - Frolio https://typewriterdatabase.com/no_info.415.typewriter-serial-number-database

By drilling down into the database and looking at pictures and descriptions of other models as well as looking at the galleries for specific examples, you may be able to troubleshoot what is missing or "off" on your machine (which is obviously missing the spools, though you may be able to fashion something similar to get yours working.)

Other examples via online search may be helpful as well: - https://www.glennsantiques.co.uk/shop/p/02/060/11 - https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/vintage-toy-typewriter-emg-dover-1000802769 - https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=EMG+Dover+Junior+typewriter&_sacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313

Documenting your own example will make it much easier for collectors in the future.

    1. The most common cause of ascites is portal hypertension secondary to chronic liver disease, which accounts for over 80% of patients with ascites

injection drug use, a history of viral hepatitis or jaundice, and birth in an area endemic for hepatitis. A history of cancer or marked weight loss arouses suspicion of malignant ascites. Fevers may suggest

nonportal hypertensive ascites include infections (tuberculous peritonitis), intra-abdominal malignancy, inflammatory disorders of the peritoneum, and ductal disruptions (chylous, pancreatic, biliary

pericarditis. A large tender liver is characteristic of acute alcoholic hepatitis or Budd-Chiari syndrome (thrombosis of the hepatic veins). Large abdominal wall veins with cephalad flow suggest portal hypertension; inferiorly directed flow implies hepatic vein obstruction The physical examination is relatively insensitive for detecting ascitic fluid. In general, patients must have at least 1500 mL of fluid to be detected reliably by this method

A PMN count of > 250/mcL (0.25 × 109/L) (neutrocytic ascites) with a PMN percentage of > 75% of all white cells is highly suggestive of bacterial peritonitis, either spontaneous primary peritonitis or secondary peritonitis (due to an intra-abdominal source of infection, eg, a perforated viscus or appendicitis

    1. to be taken from that environment and put in an institution where there’s nothing but punishment and threats and punishment and more threats. So to me, that’s very damaging. So. That’s it.

Ways of loving and parenting children were lost to countless family lines as a result of residential schools. Without proper love, care, attention and teaching, children grew into adults who didn't know how else to raise their own children besides what they picked up from the people who ran the schools. From there, trauma continues on through generations.

    2. You get whacked in the head in front of your peers in the classroom – that you’re stupid.

Shame is a huge feature of residential schools that come to my mind. School officials relentlessly treated Indigenous children poorly, and attacked them if they did not behave or perform in a manner that was acceptable to them. Right at the start from entering the school, then having their belongings taken away, to being forbidden from speaking their language or practicing their culture, to having to pray for parents back home because they were “sinners,” as Elsie Paul had said, were all ways of making the children feel ashamed of who they are.

    1. The government isolated the people. Took away the lands and put people on reserves: “You stay there. You are not to go beyond this line. You are not to go into the white community.”

This makes me think about who enforced these laws and the methods used to maintain this. The pass and permit system, not legislated by the Indian Act, held people on the reserves and prevented people from moving around like many families and communities had before settler colonial powers took over and enforced their regulations on Indigenous society.

    1. In 1941, he published "Wells, Hitler and the World State," in which he argued that Germany hewed much closer to a well-run society in which everyone thinks similarly and along scientific lines than England ever has. But it was run by a "criminal lunatic," so that didn't work out quite as Wells thought it would. Orwell also noted that patriotism, which Wells thought of as civilization-destroying, was the primary force inducing Russians and Britons to fight against Hitler.

first referent "he" is George Orwell

Example of a time in which patriotism and nationalism may have been beneficial.

    1. Wells attempts in this essay to help mankind "pull it's mind together" for the betterment of people and the planet. How is this supposed to happen in a modern media environment which is designed to pull our minds apart as rapidly as possible?

How might the strength of capitalism be leveraged to push people back toward a common middle rather than split them apart?

    2. Adler & Hutchinson's Great Books of the Western World was an encyclopedia-based attempt to focus society on a shared history as their common ground. H. G. Wells in his World Encyclopedia thesis attempts to forge a new "moving" common ground based on newly evolving knowledge based on distilling truth out of science. Shared history is obviously much easier to dispense and spread about compared to constantly keeping a growing population up to date with the forefront of science.

How could one carefully compose and juxtapose the two to have a stronger combined effect?

How could one distribute the effects evenly?

What does the statistical mechanics for knowledge management look like at the level of societies and nations?

    3. without a World En-cyclopedia to hold men's minds togetherin something like a common interpreta-tion of reality there is no hope whateverof anything but an accidental and transi-tory alleviation to any of our world trou-bles. As mankind is so it will remainuntil it pulls its mind together. And if itdoes not pull its mind together then I donot see how it can help but decline.Never was a living species more peril-ously poised than ours at the presenttime. If it does not take thoughtto endits present mental indecisiveness catastro-phe lies ahead. Our species may yet endits strange eventful history as just the last, the cleverest, of the great apes. Thegreat ape that was clever-but not cleverenough. It could escape from mostthings but not from its own mental con-fusion.
    4. I believe thatin some such way as I have sketched, themental forces now largely and regrettablyscattered and immobilized in the univer-sities, the learned societies, research in-stitutions, and technical workers of theworld could be drawn together into areal directive world intelligence, and bythat mere linking and implementing ofwhat is known, human life as a wholecould be made much surer, stronger, bolder, and happier than it has ever beenup to the present time.
    5. My impression is that human brains arevery much of a pattern, that under thesame conditions they react in the sameway, and that were it not for tradition, upbringing, accidents of circumstance, and particularly of accidental individualobsessions, we should find ourselves-since we all face the same universe-muchmore in agreement than is superficiallyapparent. We speak different languagesand dialects of thought and can even attimes catch ourselves flatly contradictingone another in words while we are doingour utmost to express the same idea. How often do we see men misrepresent-ing one another in order to exaggerate adifference and secure the gratification ofan argumentative victory!

We're far more alike than we imagine says Wells. Most of our difference is nitpicking for the sake of argument itself rather than actual meaning.

    6. They don't want their intimate convic-tions turned over and examined, and itis unfortunate that the emphasis put

upon minor differences by men of science and belief in their strenuous search for the completest truth and the exactest expression sometimes gives color to this sort of misunderstanding.

This emphasis on minor differences is exactly what many anti-science critics have done. See examples with respect to evolution and climate science denial.

    7. very carefully assem-bled with the approval of outstandingauthorities in each subject, carefully col-lated and edited, and critically presented. It would be not a miscellany but a con-centration, a clarification and a synthesis.

Compare this with Hutchins and Adler's solution undertaken just a few years following this beginning in the early 1940s and finally published in 1952: The Great Books of the Western World.

These books speak toward the idea of living well and understanding mankind, but don't have the same deeply edited and critical synthesis viewpoint.

    1. Wells believed that technological advances such as microfilm could be utilized towards this end so that "any student, in any part of the world, would be able to sit with his projector in his own study at his or her convenience to examine any book, any document, in an exact replica" (p. 54).

This sounds a lot like Vannevar Bush's Memex, n'cest pas?

    1. un allarme aereo

Air raid sirens were a common occurrence in Monowitz from the summer of 1944. Air raids gave prisoners a chance to escape, to meet and speak to fellow prisoners, to steal food, to gain some respite from their labours and the torment of the Kapos. Some prisoners welcomed the air raids as a sign that the Third Reich was obviously nearing its end. The air raids also frightened their tormentors, the SS guards.

There were large scale air attacks by the US Air Force against the I. G. Farben synthetic oil plant in Monowitz on 20 August, 3 September, 18 December and 26 December 1944, and on 19 January 1945, the day after the beginning of the evacuation of the camp. During the raid of 20 August, seventy-five prisoners were killed and a hundred and fifty injured; on 3 September, three hundred people, including SS and prisoners, were killed or injured. The high number of prisoner casualties was in part due to I. G. Farben employees forbidding prisoners to take cover in makeshift shelters.

    2. Passò una SS in bicicletta

This sentence suggests Sunday afternoon bicycle rides and walks with family in bourgeois pre-war Germany. Levi’s subsequent use of the SS man’s first name in the next sentence (‘È Rudi’) also suggests a relatively relaxed atmosphere, as if Levi sees a friend on that Sunday afternoon ride or walk.

The picture painted of a quant Sunday afternoon bicycle ride is highly ironic. By 1943, Germany was struggling to keep its armed forces and economy operating. There was a serious lack of fuel for the vehicles of the Wehrmacht and the factories of the Third Reich. Resort was made to the use of the horse and bicycle for transport, wood gas for powering automobiles, and, above all, there was rationing. Synthetic oil production was seen as an alternative to overcome the lack of access to natural resources, including oil. I. G. Farben, the giant German chemical conglomerate, took the decision in 1941 to build a synthetic oil plant at the village of Monowitz, near Auschwitz, utilising the slave labour from the Auschwitz camps and the local abundance of coal and water. As the war progressed and the fuel shortage worsened, the importance of the synthetic oil plant at Auschwitz surged. This was visible in the increasing number of Auschwitz prisoners assigned to work at the I. G. Farben plant, and the creation of a Monowitz sub camp of Auschwitz in 1942 and, subsequently, an independent camp, Auschwitz III–Monowitz in 1943. By 1944, ten thousand Auschwitz prisoners were housed at the concentration camp Auschwitz III–Monowitz, working solely for I. G. Farben.

‘Rudi’ is riding his bike as there is little petrol for vehicles, even for the SS and the concentration camps, and even at the plant supposedly producing synthetic oil.
