    1. Smith et al. summarize four categories of characteristics contributing to RTL: cognitive, attitudinal, behavioral, and personality/dispositional: Readiness to learn is a mix of cognitive (e.g., prior knowledge), attitudinal (e.g., enthusiasm), behavioral (e.g., effort; strategy use), and personality or dispositional (e.g., determination or drive) characteristics. As such, the literature indicates that readiness to learn is an elastic construct wherein an individual’s motivation, use of basic cognitive skills, and the use of “soft skills” that enable learning (e.g., communication, teamwork; U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Disability Employment Policy, n.d.) come into play. 1. what kind of character type might he fit?

Krishna is the incarnation of Vishnu. He's supposed to be the embodiment of a godlike character and hold many powerful qualities. He has many different character types he portrays in this story and is extremely accomplished. He urges the reader in a way to think about reincarnation which is obviously a big part of his character. "The place of the infinite spirit" (line 851) Krishna fits a representation of love, duty, honor and self control. Learning what type of character type Krishna is this early on is important to keep in mind as the story is read. If the reader doesn't understand the true depth of his character the story may not be as powerful. He shows many attributes of a fully developed character that knows the true power of who they are. In HIndu culture, a character like Krishna is all powerful but also shows a variety of character traits that make him a very admirable character.

    1. Recent work has revealed several new and significant aspects of the dynamics of theory change. First, statistical information, information about the probabilistic contingencies between events, plays a particularly important role in theory-formation both in science and in childhood. In the last fifteen years we’ve discovered the power of early statistical learning.

The data of the past is congruent with the current psychological trends that face the education system of today. Developmentalists have charted how children construct and revise intuitive theories. In turn, a variety of theories have developed because of the greater use of statistical information that supports probabilistic contingencies that help to better inform us of causal models and their distinctive cognitive functions. These studies investigate the physical, psychological, and social domains. In the case of intuitive psychology, or "theory of mind," developmentalism has traced a progression from an early understanding of emotion and action to an understanding of intentions and simple aspects of perception, to an understanding of knowledge vs. ignorance, and finally to a representational and then an interpretive theory of mind.

The mechanisms by which life evolved—from chemical beginnings to cognizing human beings—are central to understanding the psychological basis of learning. We are the product of an evolutionary process and it is the mechanisms inherent in this process that offer the most probable explanations to how we think and learn.

    1. then select Close

While there is an [ X ] close button for this window, the buttons at the bottom right are OK, Cancel, and Help. There is no close button.

I'd update the docs to say Cancel instead,

    2. verify the server name is the instance of SQL Server containing the SSISDB catalog, and the path shows SSIS Tutorial Deployment

My path said /SSISDB/SSIS Tutorial and there didn't seem to be a way to change it - that field was visible but disabled (grayed out).

After pressing the Connect button to the right of Authentication, the Path changed to match the documentation and became editable.

    3. On the Select Packages page, you should see all six packages from the SSIS Tutorial. In the Packages list, select Lesson 6.dtsx, then select Next.

At this step I encountered the following error: "One or more selected packages are not ready. Review the Status column for more information."

The Status column said: "Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline.ComponentVersionMismatchException: The version of Get Error Description is not compatible with this version of the DataFlow. [[The version or pipeline version or both for the specified component is higher than the current version. This package was probably created on a new version of DTS or the component than is installed on the current PC.]] at Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline.ManagedComponentHost.HostCheckAndPerformUpgrade(IDTSManagedComponentWrapper100 wrapper, Int32 lPipelineVersion)"

I was able to resolve this by changing the value Configuration Properties > General > TargetServerVersion from SQL Server 2022 to SQL Server 2019.

    1. select Build Solution

This doesn't seem to be an option in VS 2022. Instead it just allows you to build the project with SC_ followed by a long line of letters and numbers like a GUID but without spaces.

    1. On the Provider and Logs tab, in the Name column, select Lesson 3 Log File. After you have created a log provider for your package, you can optionally deselect it to turn off logging, without having to delete and re-create a log provider.

To turn it on and off you need to know to select the checkbox and toggle the checkbox with the spacebar.

    2. On the Details tab, in the Events column, select the PipelineExecutionPlan and PipelineExecutionTrees events.

No matter where I click in the package tree, ell options in the Details pane are "dimmed" as the note describes.

There is an alert at the bottom of the window that says: "⚠️ To configure unique logging options for this container, enable logging for it in the tree view."

EDIT: We discovered that selecting the checkbox and hitting space un-mutes the field, then the checkbox can be toggled with the space bar.

With it toggled OFF, you can then go to the Details tab and toggle the settings as required, then go back to the Providers and Logs tab and toggle it ON.

    3. In the Containers pane, expand all nodes of the package container hierarchy, and then clear all check boxes, including the Extract Sample Currency Data check box. Now select the check box for Extract Sample Currency Data to get only the events for this node.

When I completed this step, the nodes of the package container hierarchy did not have checkboxes. Also, the Extract Sample Currency Data checkbox did not respond to my clicks.

There was a message to clear the parent, but since the parent had no checkbox, I was unable to do so.

Drilling down resulted in checkboxes that "appear dimmed" as in the note below.

This appears to be a bug or at least a lapse in the documentation.

EDIT: We found a work-around. You can highlight the checkbox and tick it with the spacebar - but you can't select it with the mouse.

On the Lesson 3 root node, under Select the logs to use for the container: I was able to select the checkbox.

When I navigate deeper though, this option is unchecked and muted or grayed out with a message at the bottom reading:

"⚠️ To configure unique logging options for this container, enable logging for it in the tree view."

    1. that envisions credential transparency and open data as tools to  unlock the learn-and-earn ecosystem nationwide and help every learner make more informed decisions about the credentials they might pursue

WHY this stuff matters. It's a responsibility to our learners (eg consumers)

  16. Oct 2022
    1. For the tools of learning are the same, in any and everysubject; and the person who knows how to use them will, at any age, get themastery of a new subject in half the time and with a quarter of the effortexpended by the person who has not the tools at his command.
    2. modern education concentrates onteaching subjects, leaving the method of thinking, arguing, and expressingone’s conclusions to be picked up by the scholar as he goes along;

Compared to classical education, modern education concentrates on teaching only "subject" areas and relying on one to osmose the methods for thinking, arguing, and properly expressing one's ideas as they proceed, if in fact they do at all.

    3. Thewhole of the Trivium was in fact intended to teach the pupil the proper use ofthe tools of learning, before he began to apply them to “subjects” at all

The point of putting the Trivium in front of the Quadrivium is that the student is first taught the use of the "tools of learning" before they are then taught how to apply them to broad subjects as a means of learning how to learn.

    4. Is it not the great defect of our education to-day (—a defect traceablethrough all the disquieting symptoms of trouble that I have mentioned—)that although we often succeed in teaching our pupils “subjects,” we faillamentably on the whole in teaching them how to think? They learneverything, except the art of learning.

    1. Personalized examples are very resistant to interference and can greatly reduce your learning time

Creating links to one's own personal context can help one to both learn and retain new material.

    2. One of the most effective ways of enhancing memories is to provide them with a link to your personal life.

Personalizing ideas using existing memories is a method of brining new knowledge into one's own personal context and making them easier to remember.

link this to: - the pedagogical idea of context shifting as a means of learning - cards about reframing ideas into one's own words when taking notes

There is a solid group of cards around these areas of learning.

Random thought: Personal learning networks put one into a regular milieu of people who are talking and thinking about topics of interest to the learner. Regular discussions with these people helps one's associative memory by tying the ideas into this context of people with relation to the same topic. Humans are exceedingly good at knowing and responding to social relationships and within a personal learning network, these ties help to create context on an interpersonal level, but also provide scaffolding for the ideas and learning that one hopes to do. These features will tend to reinforce each other over time.

On the flip side of the coin there is anecdotal evidence of friends taking courses together because of their personal relationships rather than their interest in the particular topics.

    1. Learning how to learn is often listed as a goal of education, but acquiring the goal-directed discipline, critical thinking skills, and cognitive self-awareness that support collection of knowledge is difficult. Advanced user interfaces may be able to help users better formulate their information needs, identify what information gaps impede them, and fabricate plans to satisfy their needs. Often as information is acquired, the users's knowledge shifts enough to require a reformulation of their plans. Information visualization interfaces and hypertext environments are a first step in supporting incidental learning, exploratory browsing, and then rapid reformulation of plans. As a refined theory of knowledge acquisition emerges, improved tools will f ollow.

    1. Hands on

This might be the most explicit link to constructivism and constructionism. Not only is it about “learn by doing”, but it’s about concrete action in the physical world. Can’t help but find it limiting and restrictive to mention “3D Printing” as the main component. After all, FabLabs got started without 3D printers and the Maker movement has a lot of stuff which has little to do with 3D Printing. But it’s hard to argue that 3D Printing haven’t attracted attention, in the past couple of years. Sexier than laser etching? As Makers often point out, there’s a lot in the movement which is really very similar to what was happening in shop class. Though the trend may sound new, it’s partly based on nostalgia. A neat aspect, though, is that much of it can happen through learners’ projects cutting across class boundaries. Sure, we’ve known about project-based learning for a while. You do a project for a class or a series of classes. But how about a personal pathway (cf. “individualism”, above) through which learners add learning experiences around a central project? Learning Circles can make that into something really neat.
