But systems of schooling and educational institutions–and much of online learning– are organized in ways that deny their voices matter. My role is to resist those systems and structures to reclaim the spaces of teaching and learning as voice affirming. Voice amplifying.
Modeling annotation and note taking can allow students to see that their voices matter in conversation with the "greats" of knowledge. We can and should question authority. Even if one's internal voice questions as one reads, that might be enough, but modeling active reading and note taking can better underline and empower these modes of thought.
There are certainly currents within American culture that we can and should question authority.
Sadly some parts of conservative American culture are reverting back to paternalized power structures of "do as I say and not as I do" which leads to hypocrisy and erosion of society.
Education can be used as a means of overcoming this, though it requires preventing the conservative right from eroding this away from the inside by removing books and certain thought from the education process that prevents this. Extreme examples of this are Warren Jeff's control of religion, education, and social life within his Mormon sect.
Link to: - Lawrence Principe examples of the power establishment in Western classical education being questioned. Aristotle wasn't always right. The entire history of Western science is about questioning the status quo. (How can we center this practice not only in science, but within the humanities?)
My evolving definition of active reading now explicitly includes the ideas of annotating the text, having a direct written conversation with it, questioning it, and expanding upon it. I'm not sure I may have included some or all of these in it before. This is what "reading with a pen in hand" (or digital annotation tool) should entail. What other pieces am I missing here which might also be included?

The researchers found that the model, when it is still confused by a given phoneme (that’s an individual speech sound like an “e” or “f”), has two kinds of errors. First, there’s the fact that it doesn’t recognize the phoneme for what was intended, and thus is not recognizing the word. And second, the model has to guess which phoneme the speaker did intend, and might choose the wrong one in cases where two or more words sound roughly similar.

In a 2014 essay, “Poet Voice and Flock Mentality,” the poet Lisa Marie Basile connects it to an overall lack of diversity in the field, and a fear of breaking the mold. The consistent use of it, she writes, “delivers two messages: I am educated, I am taught, I am part-of a group … I am afraid to tell my own story in my own voice.”

Last year, Facebook said it would stop listening to voice notes in messenger to improve its speech recognition technology. Now, the company is starting a new program where it will explicitly ask you to submit your recordings, and earn money in return.
Given Facebook's history with things like breaking laws that end up with them paying billions of USD in damages (even though it's a joke), sold ads to people who explicitly want to target people who hate jews, and have spent millions of USD every year solely on lobbyism, don't sell your personal experiences and behaviours to them.
Facebook is nefarious and psychopathic.

In general I question I lot the need for this and its usefulness, as short names are usually useful only in short blocks with 1/2 params, otherwise the readability of the code is impacted a lot. We already have a good shorthand for blocks with one param (at least in the most common case), so it feels to me we're complicated the parser/syntax without a very strong case for doing so. Many features are useful to some extent, but we should also keep in mind that none of them come for free.

The engaged voice must never be fixed and absolute but always changing, always evolving in dialogue with a world beyond itself.
A helpful reminder when considering not just what it means to be a teacher-writer, but a writer in general. I'm also reminded of edtech's role in negating and even punishing this engaged voice; see, for example, John Warner's piece "Another Terrible Idea from Turnitin" and its authorship investigation.

The speaker made the point that Mahler gives the second violins their own voice, rather than merely having them give depth or support to the first violins. Because of this, he said the conductor (Herbert Blomstedt) had decided to use a placement of the performers that was becoming common in Europe for the Ninth. Instead of having all the violins on the left of the conductor, with the 1st violins on the outside and the 2nd violins on the inside, he was placing the 1st violins in their usual position, but the second violins would be on the right side of the conductor. This would have the effect of separating the voices so they could be more easily heard.

And what of that?–you may reply–the thing is done every day. Granted, my dear sir. But would you think of it quite as lightly as you do, if the thing was done (let us say) with your own sister?
Mathew Bruff carefully anticipates the reader's objections, and tries to persuade him ("my dear sir") to reconsider his assessment of Godfrey Ablewhite. To better understand how and why The Moonstone's various narrators directly address readers, we could run a word collocation analysis and/or a sentiment analysis on each moment that features a narrator addressing a reader. Then, we would be informed enough to speculate about the extent to which such addresses prove effective.

Perhaps because I studied Calkins and Atwell, with an emphasis in the work of James Moffett, a transition through workshop to applying technology was easier than for those who had not, and still have not, experienced the personal and individual nature of a writer. The emphasis is on the writer as a writer.

Modernist ethnographers and sociological participant observers attempted rigorous qualitative studies of important social processes, including deviance and social control in the classroom and society. This was a moment of creative ferment.A new generation of graduate students across the human disciplines encountered new interpretive theories (e.g., ethnomethodology, phenomenology, critical [Page 314]theory, feminism). They were drawn to qualitative research practices that would let them give a voice to society's underclass.

This narrative voice is interesting, considering the way he considers the problems of the author/narrator in the previous pages.

Various meanings and definitions of voice had been advanced in the literature. Dundon et al. (2004: 1153) noted that the ‘precise meaning of the term “employee voice” ’ was open to question, though there were some commonalities. Voice mechanisms were generally seen as a way to provide employees with the ability to articulate concerns and to influence the actions of management. Employee voice had commonly been defined as a two-way process of communication, which is characterised by an exchange of information (Marchington et al., 2001; see also Wilkinson et al., 2004). Employee voice could therefore be seen in terms of three dimensions: the provision of information by management to employees, the willingness of management to listen to employees and management's preparedness to discuss work-related problems and issues (see Van Dyne et al., 2003; Marchington, 2006; Bryson and Freeman, 2007; Cannell, 2008).

Yes, the women could speak-but only if it was obvious that the Holy Spirit was providing their words.
This is the most fascinating aspect here, which is not unprecedented. Think of the phrase handmaiden to truth that we earlier ran across. That seems to be at work here.
This is, then, a really interesting end around the prohibition of women speaking.

So, open is not good for everyone, and tends to bias those in already privileged positions — race, class, gender. The hype around open, while well-intentioned, is also unintentionally putting many people in harm’s way and they in turn end up having to endure so much. The people calling for open are often in positions of privilege, or have reaped the benefits of being open early on — when the platform wasn’t as easily used for abuse, and when we were privileged to create the kinds of networks that included others like us.

It would provide opportunity for free expression: literate and illiterate alike could record, preserve, disseminate, and repeat their opinions. The present investment in TV, instead, provides bureaucrats, whether politicians or educators, with the power to sprinkle the continent with institutionally produced programs which they-or their sponsors--decide are good for or in demand by the people.
Allocation of resources - becomes an issue of power and a separation of the haves and have nots, which is perpetuated. TV keeps the realm of power in a bubble (false spread), whereas the tape recorders would allow the spread of information and give a voice to any and all. Perhaps the TV could reach a wider audience than an individual recorder would, but regardless of quality or reach, the recorder would provide a sense of value to the user that is desperately lacking in the current world. For example - community radio in many communities throughout Africa accomplishes a variety of purposes, even allowing the women a place outside of the home and empowering them (it does not matter who is listening, as long as they have a space to share).

finding your voice in your writing
-
The only way to find your voice is to write. Your voice isn’t something you can pin down with any certainty. You can’t force it. The more you think about it the more your ‘voice’ is suppressed.
good working definition
-
That is not to say your voice isn’t going to be colored by your life and experiences, it will be. When not thinking consciously about what to write, how to write it, how it will be perceived, everything that reeks of trying too hard, your writing will become more lucid. It will flow from you with much less effort–like a relaxed fart. See–that’s voice. Well, it’s mine anyway.

When students see adults actually listening to them with respect, that is when they begin to realize they have a voice and can make a difference in their world.
I hope this is true. And I love the idea that adults are that important to students. Still I wonder how this fits with the connected-learning notion that youth want to be heard and recognized by their peers. I suppose it isn't an either/or: some youth seek peer approval, others want to be heard by adults. When you post on an open social network, you never know who will respond.
