    1. Unjust Judges.

Is it not also unjust to categorically close the door on each of the preferences she lists above? (still smarting from the sophistry jab)

She makes a clear cut of her own here, with particular 'tastes' on one side falling into the "foolish" class and all the 'tastes' on the other not foolish.

    1. By this means, his sentiments are perverted; nor have the same beauties and blemishes the same influence upon him, as if he had imposed a proper violence on his imagination, and had forgotten himself for a moment. So far his taste evidently departs from the true standard; and of consequence loses all credit and authority

This is stuffed to the gills with assumptions. And while there is a good deal of boilerplate Enlightenment business going on, Hume also seems to be planting the seeds later authors will reap.

Hume is requiring of the listener/taster/receiver, which is not new. "You think rap is good because you don't understand 'art' " is a common refrain. The elites have always used exposure to canonical works and forms as a method of discrediting those outside the circle, and have dismissed emerging works and forms as "lowbrow."

What strikes me about Hume, and perhaps posthumanism (along with Foucault) would find this noteworthy, is that this "violence on" a person is not done by the community, but by the person themself.

    1. Amiracle is a service. It is the maximal service you can render to another. It is a way of loving your neighbour as yourself.

What service could be better for your brother then to undo all curses you have cast on him? You don't perceive your grievances and judgments as harmful spells so far, and yet when being held against your brothers this is exactly what they are.

There is no more self-contradictory concept than that of "idle thoughts." What gives rise to the perception of a whole world can hardly be called idle. Every thought you have contributes to truth or to illusion; either it extends the truth or it multiplies illusions. W-16.2

There are no idle thoughts. All thinking produces form at some level. T-2.6.9

      Love holds no grievances. W-68

Let miracles replace all grievances. W-78

    1. So, in graduation, and the commitment to Knowing, it does indeed feel as though one is giving up that which is utterly meaningful—a sense of worth and meaning which is acquired through personal authorship. The process of thinking, reasoning, and coming to conclusions—which is another way of saying “making judgments”—will be replaced by Knowing. And the actions and words which followed the thinking, reasoning, and judgment will be replaced by expressing the Knowing as you are Knowing it—not as you have heard it and repeated it at a later time.

Raj warns that there will be a sense of loss gained in ego through personal authorship.

He defines judgement as "The process of thinking, reasoning, and coming to conclusions".

    1. for while there are no definite kinds of action associated with the fact that a man is fair or dark, tall or short, it does make a difference if he is young or old, just or unjust.

very true. You cannot judge a book by its cover.

    1. The forms of government are four -- democracy, oligarchy, aristocracy, monarchy. The supreme right to judge and decide always rests, therefore, with either a part or the whole of one or other of these governing powers.

Four forms of government. Judgement lies with government.

    1. Let me ask you, however, not to pay any attention to what you have heard about me in the past from my would-be slanderers and calumniators, not to credit charges which have been made without proof or trial, and not to be influenced by the suspicions which have been maliciously implanted in you by my enemies, but to judge me to be the kind of man which the accusation and the defense in this trial will show me to be; for if you decide the case on this basis, you will have the credit of judging honorably and in accordance with the law, while I, for my part, shall obtain my complete deserts.

Another instance of asking his audience to withhold judgement until he's finished performing.
