    1. The Za-patista solidarity networks marked the beginning of a new phase, the emer-gence of networked movements as the internet and digital tools began to spread to activists, and general populations.
    2. They also found themselves unable to sustain and organize in the long term in a manner proportional to the energy they had been able to attract initially and the legitimacy they enjoyed in their demands.

      This reminds me of an excellent example I heard recently on Scene on Radio's Men series which tells the story of a rape which occurred several years prior to the bus boycott that helped to rally the community and make the bus boycott far more successful than it would have been without the prior incident and local reportage.

    1. Even within general pediatrics, there has been a potential further fragmentation by site of care. Perhaps as a form of subspecialization, the hospitalist movement has grown steadily. This too has had and will continue to impact the health care delivery system. The term hospitalist was initially coined in 1996 by Wachter and Goldman.13 The number and demand for hospitalists has been increasing. A survey by the Society for Hospitalist Medicine found that in the last 2 years, there has been a 31% increase in the number of hospitalist groups.14 The impact of hospitalists on health care delivery has steadily evolved, thanks to evidence that suggests that hospitalists can improve efficiency and quality of care through their expertise. Hospitalists function both as inpatient generalists and in subspecialty settings—for example, on a cardiology or oncology inpatient unit. To this point, most have had core residency training in general pediatrics, some in the few existing hospitalist fellowship programs; and others have elected hospital-based practice after subspecialty training.The hospitalist movement adds new challenges to the health care delivery system.15, 16 It creates another point of potential fragmentation of care as a single hospitalist may not stay with an individual patient and family throughout their hospital stay. It is another place where there may be disconnect between the primary care provider and the hospital based provider. Yet on the positive side, hospitalist care may be more efficient and focused on the systems within the hospital and the quality and safety of care. The training of pediatric residents often prepares them for a hospitalist career, and the career is appealing to many because of the flexibility and control of work hours which appear to be important factors in the recent trends in specialty choice of medical students.17

      Alone clearly not - there has to be a movement in which suddenly leaders appear - one could say the same about Gandhi, Churchill, Hitler, Trump, Beyoncé, et al

      Going back to the “projects” in the Maker Movement. Not “project-based learning” with projects set through the curriculum. But the kind of “quest” that allows for learning along the way and which may switch at a moment’s notice.

    2. the Maker Movement in schools, when fully embraced, is one such example of shifting roles in the classroom.

    1. Hands on

      This might be the most explicit link to constructivism and constructionism. Not only is it about “learn by doing”, but it’s about concrete action in the physical world. Can’t help but find it limiting and restrictive to mention “3D Printing” as the main component. After all, FabLabs got started without 3D printers and the Maker movement has a lot of stuff which has little to do with 3D Printing. But it’s hard to argue that 3D Printing haven’t attracted attention, in the past couple of years. Sexier than laser etching? As Makers often point out, there’s a lot in the movement which is really very similar to what was happening in shop class. Though the trend may sound new, it’s partly based on nostalgia. A neat aspect, though, is that much of it can happen through learners’ projects cutting across class boundaries. Sure, we’ve known about project-based learning for a while. You do a project for a class or a series of classes. But how about a personal pathway (cf. “individualism”, above) through which learners add learning experiences around a central project? Learning Circles can make that into something really neat.

    1. A path is not composed of positions. It is nondeeomposable: a dynamic unity, That comil/ulty of movement is of an order of reality other than the measurable, divisible space it can be con­ firmed as having crossed.

      Again...another instance in which identity/position is subordinated to movement and emergence. Placing the position before the movement result in logical aporias, but forgoing identity/position is to acknowledge movement.

      The question of how to critically loop in issues of time with this qualitative transformation/movement seems key.

    3. Of course, a body occupying one position on the grid might succeed in making a move to occupy another position. In fact, certain normative progressions, such as that from child to adult, are coded in. But this doesn't change the fact that what defines the body is not the movement itself, only its beginning and endpoints. Movement is en­ tirely subordinated to the positions it connects. These are predefined. Adding movement like this adds nothing at all. You just get twO successive states: multiples of zero.

      This is very much like [go with me on this one] an organizational chart that breaks down an organization's hierarchy. All the nodes are specialized and individual (person/position) but the lines are all the same. Thus...movement (of succession/information designated by the connecting lines in that org structure) is elided in favor of positions/identities within that organization. Verbs are lost in favor of the nouns.

    4. When I think of my body and ask what it does to earn that name, two things stand out. IIIIIOVCS, It/eels. In fact, it docs both at the same time, It moves as it feels, and il feels itself moving. Can we think a body without this: an intrinsic conne ct ion between movement and sensation whereby each immediately summons the other?

      The body is not prior to its sensations/movements. A body does not sense and move through space but movement and sense embodies.

Thomas Mueller, an Assistant Research Scientist in my lab, leads this project. Also on this grant, postdoc Chris Fleming is investigating theoretical aspects of animal foraging and statistical issues associated with empirical data on animal movements. This project is developing innovative data management and analysis tools that will allow scientists and conservation managers to use animal relocation and tracking data to study movement processes at the population-level, focusing on the interrelationship of multiple moving individuals.     1. My project seeks to develop computer models that simulate and link behavioral movement mechanisms which can be either based on memory, perceptual cues or triggered by environmental factors. It explores their efficiency under different scenarios of resource distributions across time and space. Finally it tries to integrate empirical data on resource distributions as well as movements of moving animals, such as satellite data on primary productivity and satellite tracking data of Mongolian gazelles.
