Besides, young men like to feel that there is a young woman not very far away.
Free indirect discourse? Is Mrs. Mooney saying that it's good for business that Polly is there? Or is this a sarcastic, annoyed comment on young men?

please
I think this is the first and only time the word 'please' is uttered in the story. And I would not have expected it to come from the young girl. There's something very seemingly obnoxious yet profoundly mysterious about this girl. She pleads to wait in the car, finally not exposed or seen by others. It sounds like her appearance has shaped her life and defined much of her identity thus far, but she's fighting not to let it be everything (e.g., she's seeing through people who are staring at her). Symbolically, when her dark coat, perhaps symbolizing her beauty as a curse rather than a blessing or her rude demeanor, falls, revealing her opposite-colored skin, and, "like a flower... emerging from its dark bud, " she's becoming herself again.

More fundamentally, I believe the framework of “white privilege” is very unhelpful for better racial understanding. (For one, it is often misleadingly applied to situations that involve either class privilege or specifically anti-black prejudice. And besides, it seems perverse to suggest that not being mistreated or discriminated against is a privilege, rather than a basic right.)

A school friend might call him between 2 and 4 in the afternoon causing “an alarm signal
When the author described his families newly installed phone in the 1900s, it brought up very similar feelings that i could relate to even as child of the 1990s. Phones had been around for some time but I clearly remember my first few experiences been terrifyingly exciting. I would swap phone numbers and set up calls for after school with my friends, and unknown to my parents, I would wait for the 'alarm signal to go off'. To their surprise the the call was for me. I would sheepishly take the call with, heart thumping to find out who the voice on the other end was and if it was a boy that was calling I was terrified to say anything at all due to lake of privacy so those calls would never last long! Its interesting to see how quickly changes in communication have happened so rapidly in the past 30 years compared to the previous 100 years. It makes me think about how the ease of access to mobile phones is changing communication in the world, particularly among younger generations that see mobile phones as the norm and will never experience the good old fashioned house phone

it may actually have the power to reach (and register) new voters.
This is a great use of the app. It's important to try and bring our youth's attention to worldly issues. Reaching out to them through something they check multiple times a day is an excellent strategy. We may be helping hundreds of thousands of new voters realize that they have the power to change the world.

our current position on the common agricultural policy. It was introduced before some of these environmental principles were refined and used in European legislation. As a result, we are now in the ridiculous position where the polluter pays principle would have helped us, as taxpayers and as water company customers and payers, avoid paying farmers twice. We are paying water companies to pay farmers to stop doing something that, as taxpayers, we are paying farmers to do. The polluter pays principle, had it existed when the common agricultural policy was first set in place, would have been a hugely valuable way of preventing that very wasteful situation.
interesting linking of polluter pays principle to improving EU legislation

I also share the anxiety of the noble Lord, Lord Rooker, about whether there will be real welly behind the regulator. I was chief executive of the Environment Agency, the environmental regulator, which had to help negotiate the urban wastewater treatment directive infraction proceedings that produced the Thames tideway. In spite of wanting and willing there to be an example elsewhere in the world of a body established by a Government that is capable of fining its own Government —and hence its own establishing power—I have not been able to find one. I hope, however, that Ministers will look assiduously at producing that result.

instructional staff
I think Nathaniel is right to point out a gender problem, as he has in his marginal comment, here. However, I think we also see a class problem arising more starkly. Whereas before there was a certain "professionalization" automatically associated with teaching at the college level, the "respectability" teaching once granted has disappeared. Although he does not explicitly invoke the word "class," Weaver clearly feels that those who make up the "instructional staff" are low in stature and respectability. To be a little crass, this sounds an awful lot like Weaver is complaining about "the neighborhood going down hill," so to speak. Although the "instructional staff" presumably have some sort of authority and experience to earn this teaching role, Weaver sees their arrival as signaling the decline of rhetoric as he once knew it, rather than seeing it as a sign that rhetoric is becoming more accessible and that more groups of people are actively engaging in rhetoric.

If, however, it should not be the good fortune of children to have such nurses as I should wish, let them at least have one attentive paedagogus, not unskilled in language, who, if anything is spoken incorrectly by the nurse in the presence of his pupil, may at once correct it and not let it settle in his mind.
