Fellow KM blogger from back in the day [[Jim McGee]] (he blogs since Oct 2001) articulates in a slightly different way something that is key ot my perspective on org KM too: PKM is the foundation for org KM. I picked that up from Sveiby's 1997 book. n:: Jim phrases it here as K sharing doesn't happen between people when they have nothing to share, bc they don't do PKM. Then any sharing is a burden as it requires formulation first. I share stuff with colleagues daily, because it is a benefit to share things I already formulated.

However, by doing so the sender mayreveal additional information through the block’s hash pointers, e.g. the identities of other groupmembers
Well, when sharing such a block off-group, you may skip transmitting its deps. In Social Networking that may be alright. And when off-group agent gets accepted to group, he's able to get the stuff below.
However, that does complicate piggybacking, as it'll be seen that the previously off-group agent has some block (but actually he doesn't have its deps).
-
However, sinceevery block in GSN is signed, when one breaches privacy within the protocol the breach carriestheir signature so the culprit can be identified.
What stops a culprit to send off-group a message that is not his own? We can only achieve the "culprit detection" by addressing and signing every message we send to A. This is a lot of re-signing. And we won't have a convergent DAG.

Our screen sharing, on the other hand, is a bolted-on hack
Not to mention highly inefficient , slow and unresponsive. The biggest thing that we've settled to see this as normal and consider a 10% speed increase as an innovation , think of what would happened if we had a better protocol for sharing information that followed the original design.
I'm particularly concerned with the adoption curve of technology when we disregard optimization it serves indirectly as a way to discriminate against people that can't afford the fastest connection the latest hardware. I wonder if we're at the point with AI assisted coding that we can optimize these systems and the cost of doing so would justify "doing it properly" , yet if we don't know about this principles we're completely on the blind.

If I continue the conversation after I create a shared link, will the rest of my conversation appear in the shared link? No. Think of a shared link as a snapshot of a conversation up to the point at which you generate the shared link. Once a shared link is created for a specific conversation or message, it will not include any future messages added to the conversation after the link was generated. This means that if you continue the conversation after creating the shared link, those additional messages will not be visible through the shared link.
-
Are shared links public? Who can access my shared links?Anyone who has access to a shared link can view and continue the linked conversation. We encourage you not to share any sensitive content, as anyone with the link can access the conversation or share the link with other people.

Shared links offer a new way for users to share their ChatGPT conversations, replacing the old and burdensome method of sharing screenshots.

Benefits of sharing permanent notes .t3_12gadut._2FCtq-QzlfuN-SwVMUZMM3 { --postTitle-VisitedLinkColor: #9b9b9b; --postTitleLink-VisitedLinkColor: #9b9b9b; --postBodyLink-VisitedLinkColor: #989898; }
reply to u/bestlunchtoday at https://www.reddit.com/r/Zettelkasten/comments/12gadut/benefits_of_sharing_permanent_notes/
I love the diversity of ideas here! So many different ways to do it all and perspectives on the pros/cons. It's all incredibly idiosyncratic, just like our notes.
I probably default to a far extreme of sharing the vast majority of my notes openly to the public (at least the ones taken digitally which account for probably 95%). You can find them here: https://hypothes.is/users/chrisaldrich.
Not many people notice or care, but I do know that a small handful follow and occasionally reply to them or email me questions. One or two people actually subscribe to them via RSS, and at least one has said that they know more about me, what I'm reading, what I'm interested in, and who I am by reading these over time. (I also personally follow a handful of people and tags there myself.) Some have remarked at how they appreciate watching my notes over time and then seeing the longer writing pieces they were integrated into. Some novice note takers have mentioned how much they appreciate being able to watch such a process of note taking turned into composition as examples which they might follow. Some just like a particular niche topic and follow it as a tag (so if you were interested in zettelkasten perhaps?) Why should I hide my conversation with the authors I read, or with my own zettelkasten unless it really needed to be private? Couldn't/shouldn't it all be part of "The Great Conversation"? The tougher part may be having means of appropriately focusing on and sharing this conversation without some of the ills and attention economy practices which plague the social space presently.
There are a few notes here on this post that talk about social media and how this plays a role in making them public or not. I suppose that if I were putting it all on a popular platform like Twitter or Instagram then the use of the notes would be or could be considered more performative. Since mine are on what I would call a very quiet pseudo-social network, but one specifically intended for note taking, they tend to be far less performative in nature and the majority of the focus is solely on what I want to make and use them for. I have the opportunity and ability to make some private and occasionally do so. Perhaps if the traffic and notice of them became more prominent I would change my habits, but generally it has been a net positive to have put my sensemaking out into the public, though I will admit that I have a lot of privilege to be able to do so.
Of course for those who just want my longer form stuff, there's a website/blog for that, though personally I think all the fun ideas at the bleeding edge are in my notes.
Since some (u/deafpolygon, u/Magnifico99, and u/thiefspy; cc: u/FastSascha, u/A_Dull_Significance) have mentioned social media, Instagram, and journalists, I'll share a relevant old note with an example, which is also simultaneously an example of the benefit of having public notes to be able to point at, which u/PantsMcFail2 also does here with one of Andy Matuschak's public notes:
[Prominent] Journalist John Dickerson indicates that he uses Instagram as a commonplace: https://www.instagram.com/jfdlibrary/ here he keeps a collection of photo "cards" with quotes from famous people rather than photos. He also keeps collections there of photos of notes from scraps of paper as well as photos of annotations he makes in books.
It's reasonably well known that Ronald Reagan shared some of his personal notes and collected quotations with his speechwriting staff while he was President. I would say that this and other similar examples of collaborative zettelkasten or collaborative note taking and their uses would blunt u/deafpolygon's argument that shared notes (online or otherwise) are either just (or only) a wiki. The forms are somewhat similar, but not all exactly the same. I suspect others could add to these examples.
And of course if you've been following along with all of my links, you'll have found yourself reading not only these words here, but also reading some of a directed conversation with entry points into my own personal zettelkasten, which you can also query as you like. I hope it has helped to increase the depth and level of the conversation, should you choose to enter into it. It's an open enough one that folks can pick and choose their own path through it as their interests dictate.

not really about the content of the sessions. Or anything you take from it. The most important thing are the relationships, the connections you gain from sharing the things you're passionate about with the people who are interested in it, the momentum you build from working on your project in preparation for a session
I somewhat disagree - I think this community building is successful precisely because there is a shared interest or goal. It goes hand in hand. If there is no connecting theme or goal, the groups fall apart.

🌟 Highlight words as they are spoken (karaoke anybody?). 🌟 Navigate video by clicking on words. 🌟 Share snippets of text (with video attached!). 🌟 Repurpose by remixing using the text as a base and reference.
If I understand it correctly, with hyperaudio, one can also create transcription to somebody else's video or audio when embedded.
In that case, if you add to hyperaudio the annotation capablity of hypothes.is or docdrop, the vision outlined in the article on Global Knowledge Graph is already a reality.

Much like Umberto Eco (How to Write a Thesis), in the closing paragraphs of his essay, Goutor finally indicates that note cards can potentially be reused for multiple projects because each one "contains a piece of information which does not depend on a specific context for its value." While providing an example of how this might work, he goes even further by not only saying that "note-cards should never be discarded" but that they might be "recycled" by passing them on to "another interested party" while saying that their value and usefulness is dependent upon how well they may have adhered to some of the most basic note taking methods. I don’t like that when I read the Basecamp news and had a visceral reaction, my first thought was, “Will my commit access be revoked if I share what’s on my mind?” It’s incredibly unclear what mechanisms exist to remove commit access from someone against their will, and also unclear what recourse those people can take to get it re-instated.

This article is for those who want to keep traveling despite restrictions due to covid. Basically giving tips on how to navigate the multiple governmental restrictions and policies including links to airline or country websites for choosing destinations. Because of this trend in travel advice in covid times, we may see attitudes towards travel shift to travel knowing the risks involved (quarantine, masks requirements, etc.) and hence see tourism rise again. Last minute covid holiday packages. What if the trend for remaining home also stayed the same for next five years and the adventure seekers become the avatars for the folks who want to stay at home.
The crisis is changing the way how people will enjoy their international holiday, with an extra concern on testing and quarantine expenses and risk taking. That may have an impact on the tourism market, asking the airline companies to provide flexible policies /products and may witness the booming of travel insurance market.

Students learn a great deal by explaining their ideas to others and by participating in activities in which they can learn from their peers. They develop skills in organizing and planning learning activities, working collaboratively with others, giving and receiving feedback and evaluating their own learning.
I completely agree with this. As I stated in my other annotation, being able to collaborate with peers is an excellent way to learn, since you can see/hear other people's thoughts and ideas that you may have not thought of yourself.

Miracles are teaching devices for demonstrating it is as blessed to give as to receive.
Please do not use this statement to justify a charity of any kind. The author speaks about the level of the Mind. When a musician shares his song with others, it hardly means for him it's lost; the spreading makes it stronger and gives him opportunities he didn't have before. The Course takes this idea and brings it to the level where you will be amazed for sure.
If you share a physical possession, you do divide its ownership. If you share an idea, however, you do not lessen it. All of it is still yours although all of it has been given away. T-5.1.1
A major learning goal this course has set is to reverse your view of giving, so you can receive ... God's gifts will never lessen when they are given away. They but increase thereby. W-105.3
To learn that giving and receiving are the same has special usefulness, because it can be tried so easily and seen as true. W-108.6
All that I give is given to myself. W-126

Among the many phenomena we’d tentatively attribute, in large part, to the trend: the rise of sharebait (nee clickbait) and the general BuzzFeedification of traditional media; the Internet hoax-industrial complex, which only seems to be growing stronger; and the utter lack of intelligent online discourse around any remotely complicated, controversial topic.

n the near future, given the increase in the use and profile of preprintservers, and alternative publishing platforms such as F1000 Researc

greater integration of data, data security, and data sharing through the establishment of a searchable database.
Would be great to connect these efforts with others who work on this from the data end, e.g. RDA as mentioned above.
Also, the presentation at http://www.gfbr.global/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/PG4-Alpha-Ahmadou-Diallo.pptx states
This data will be made available to the public and to scientific and humanitarian health communities to disseminate knowledge about the disease, support the expansion of research in West Africa, and improve patient care and future response to an outbreak.
but the notion of public access is not clearly articulated in the present article.

Thefirst step in answeringthese questions is to reject the view of methods and digital data analysis as‘pure’technical toolsin the hands of objective agents, and subject those very tools to a more rigorous form of study:methods must become objects of inquiry.
This reminds me of what Bodong has discussed in the Chinese paper on the difference between "analytics" and "analysis". If we can treated "analysis" as an objective, pure technical process, or maybe we cannot, "analytics" can never be objective. For any research, what is considered as evidence, how to collect evidence, and how to interpret the results, either the quantitative or qualitative, are far from objective or pure technical.

I had an assumption that learning analytics mostly use data collected from online learning environment. This may not be true, but it is possible that online teaching can change people's mindset of what learning is, and how learning should occur.

The assessment of frequencies and sequences of regulatory activities in learning environments provides a novelperspective on SRL that complements and potentially supersedes traditional self-report measures
Learning analytics really can help provide a better description of students' behavior, in which couldn't be measured by survey or other self-report methods. But it seems there can be research performed on how what students actually do can be related to what they reported they were doing.

Through the use of mobile devices, learning man-agement systems (LMS), and social media, a greater portion of the learning process generates digital trails. A student who logs into an LMS leaves thousands of data points, including navigation patterns, pauses, reading habits, and writing habits. These data points may be ambiguous and require additional exploration in order to understand what an extended pause of reading means
The digital technologies formed new media for organizing educational content and student interactivity. Talking specifically about the rich data in LMS, which still in demand for in-depth research and exploration, may bring instructors deeper understanding on students' performance and their personal academic needs.

There are all these different structures. Thirdly, we need to inter-pollinate, and share these experiences. We need the culture of dialogue. We need to learn how to communicate in different ways- to share patterns, dance, paint etc. Finally, I would like to call it a carnival, and not a confluence- including different worlds,

One of the proposals would be togenerate more spaces for sharing knowledges. Eg providing virtual spaces, eg I have done this, what has and hasn ́t worked. I admire what you do in Unitierra, and the Zapatista, and my context is very different, so we need to change the way of looking atthings.

In historical context, Uber’s extraordinary losses are thus not just a case of growing pains of an ambitious Silicon Valley startup, but a reflection of the deep structural deficiencies in ride-hail industry economics. Prior to artificial regulatory supply caps, the unregulated taxi industry was unprofitable and subject to growing concerns over negative externalities. Uber is now facing the same relentless drag on its P&L.

The Achilles’ heel of Uber and Lyft is their centralized management of pricing. This week's uproar by drivers — and their willingness to join an alternative — shows the failure of that approach. You cannot build a long-term relationship with drivers if you are taking away their ability to set their own pricing. Arcade City will decentralize those decisions to the level of the driver and their customers.

This is a very important statistic to quote, because people always assume the negative use case, i.e., "weaponizing data". I think that does happen, but the more we can gather the statistics, the better we are able to address it.

t’s noteworthy that 174 of the 177 proposals submitted did not involve reanalysis of original results or disproving of the findings of the original analyses; the bulk of the proposals were for new research. Thus, sponsors’ fears regarding making these data available have not been realized.
Good statistic to have

Of course, if you want to put a positive spin on this kind of work, you can call it flexible, decentralized micro-entrepreneurship. But pan out, and it looks more like feudalism, with thousands of small subsistence farmers paying tribute to a baron that grants them access to land they don’t own.

as faculty mature in their understanding of OER they will have a greater desire to engage in these and other open pedagogy practices
disagree that it's a faculty maturity issue - if it gets easier to do (less time) more of them will. But not if the results are not openly shared.

Within the workings of the informal economy bullying and violence is rife. The harshness of these conditions, and the sword of damocles of deportation, is precisely why this labour is so cheap, and so many businesses opt for it. Bullying makes workers subservient, and scares them away from industrial organising (although there are now amazing unions now fighting for workers in these sectors - the IWGB, IWW, and UVW.) It is not just those businesses that do well out of this exploitation. It makes things cheaper for everyone, and oils the cogs of the whole economy. Many people are happy to reap this work’s benefits without ever taking responsibility for the suffering it causes.

Where is the Facebook shareable link for this video? I would like to hit share, for it to look pretty and for you -hypothes.is- to earn and retain new subscribers?
(If I share this via youtube, the funnel flows to youtube. Do you have a dedicated "landing page" with simply this vid? I'll reply here if I find a "pretty" way.. Thanks Guys!)

Uber is synonymous with its “surge pricing” policy—when cars are scarce and rides in high demand, users are warned that the cost of a ride may be much higher than normal. It’s then up to them whether to pay the premium or find another way to get where they’re going.

The showdown in Austin highlights a paradox for cities and citizens as peer-to-peer platforms like Uber and Lyft extend their operations. Their wide-reaching outreach campaigns mimic the style of local politics, waging attacks and appealing to and seeking our support as “constituents.” But in practice, their actions don’t necessarily represent our best interests.

Luca and his colleagues found requests with African American sounding names were roughly 16 percent less likely to be accepted than their white-sounding counterparts. They found discrimination across the board: among cheap listings and expensive listings, in diverse neighborhoods and homogenous neighborhoods, and with novice hosts as well as experienced hosts. They also found that black hosts were also less likely to accept requests from guests with African American-sounding names than with white-sounding ones.

My friends here who started a micro-brewery tell stories that when they were starting, the other micro-breweries in the region did not seem them as a threat/competition, and in fact, offered advice, equipment, supplies. The people who do this stuff see it as a net gain for everyone if someone can help raise the regional interest in craft beer; if everyone grows more customers, everyone wins. It’s not a tech startup mentality.
Craft beer is a fascinating world, partly because of this approach to sharing. Much of the so-called “Craft Beer Revolution” happened through homebrewers who were sharing tips and recipes online (not to mention ingredients and samples offline). The idea, in many an indie/craft scene, is that the out-group is the Mainstream. Very similar story among owners of Third Wave cafés. Of course, there are differences. But still… When you have a “common enemy” (Anheuser-Busch, Starbucks, McGraw-Hill…), it’s much easier to grow together.

he only problem associated with this second block of sharing time is stopping. Sticking to the 10-minute time limit is often very difficult because children sincerely enjoy this time for sharing their ideas, work, and discoverie
The fact that kids are enjoying the sharing time and what they have to share, is incredible! It shows that allowing students to choose their literature can create an extremely engaged population of students.

The term "sharing economy" was stolen a few years ago, by firms that aren't sharing anything.
The technology of these platforms is not expensive to build. Meanwhile, these companies have skyrocketing valuations (exceeding even the growth trajectory of Facebook) because they are absorbing value from the people actually creating and providing the value.
Everyone on the Internet is being exploited without noticing.
"Our personal data is not unlike labor -- you don’t lose by giving it away, but if you don’t get anything back you’re not receiving what you deserve. Information ... is inherently valuable."
An economy where workers get fair exchange for the value they produce is possible. Rustrum points out these means:
- Cooperatives. In particular, platform coops
- ESOP, employee stock ownership plans
- Crowd funding
- Blockchain - digital peer-to-peer secure transactions

Hypothes.is reminds me a lot of some of the primary goals of the MeAggregator JISC project, as well as having a lot in common with other annotation tools (obviously!). The implementation appears smooth and reliable, and having just revisited it (thanks to a Facebook post by a friend of a friend), I wish I had been using it for a while now. I suspect it will be finding its way in to my teaching practice very soon.<br> This page on their site "Back to School with Annotation: 10 Ways to Annotate with Students" has some useful suggestions. I particularly need to check out the private groups and sharing options, and investigate the possibility of collating annotations (potentially producing new documents from a set of annotations).

A “sharing economy,” by definition, is lateral in structure. It is a peer-to-peer economy. But Uber, as its name suggests, is hierarchical in structure. It monitors and controls its drivers, demanding that they purchase services from it while guiding their movements and determining their level of earnings. And its pricing mechanisms impose unpredictable costs on its customers, extracting greater amounts whenever the data suggests customers can be compelled to pay them. This is a top-down economy, not a “shared” one.
The true sharing economy is about things like sharing unused tools and resources, community property, and combining purchasing power. (People should not say "there is no such thing" when pointing out that Uber, Lyft, and Airbnb are not examples.)

Google is merely interested sharing the code. As Dean says, this will help the company improve this code. But at the same time, says Monga, it will also help improve machine learning as a whole, breeding all sorts of new ideas. And, well, these too will find their way back into Google. “Any advances in machine learning,” he says, “will be advances for us as well.”

Access to primary data from trials has important implications for both clinical practice and research, including that published conclusions about efficacy and safety should not be read as authoritative. The reanalysis of Study 329 illustrates the necessity of making primary trial data and protocols available to increase the rigour of the evidence base.
How can anyone argue that science isn't served by making primary data available? We must recognize that more people are harmed by not sharing data than are harmed by data being shared.

There is now a strong body of evidence showing failure to comply with results-reporting requirements across intervention classes, even in the case of large, randomised trials [3–7]. This applies to both industry and investigator-driven trials. I

Anyone withholding the methods and results of a clinical trial is already in breach of multiple codes and regulations, including the Declaration of Helsinki, various promises from industry and professional bodies, and, in many cases, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Amendment Act of 2007. Indeed, a recently published cohort study of trials in clinicaltrials.gov found that more than half had failed to post results; and even though the FDA is entitled to issue fines of $10,000 a day for transgressions, no such fines have ever been levied [3].
Sticks don't work if they aren't used. I find this rather disturbing.
-
The best currently available evidence shows that the methods and results of clinical trials are routinely withheld from doctors, researchers, and patients [2–5], undermining our best efforts at informed decision making.

Reasons for not making data electronically available. Regarding their attitudes towards data sharing, most of the respondents (85%) are interested in using other researchers' datasets, if those datasets are easily accessible. Of course, since only half of the respondents report that they make some of their data available to others and only about a third of them (36%) report their data is easily accessible, there is a major gap evident between desire and current possibility. Seventy-eight percent of the respondents said they are willing to place at least some their data into a central data repository with no restrictions. Data repositories need to make accommodations for varying levels of security or access restrictions. When asked whether they were willing to place all of their data into a central data repository with no restrictions, 41% of the respondents were not willing to place all of their data. Nearly two thirds of the respondents (65%) reported that they would be more likely to make their data available if they could place conditions on access. Less than half (45%) of the respondents are satisfied with their ability to integrate data from disparate sources to address research questions, yet 81% of them are willing to share data across a broad group of researchers who use data in different ways. Along with the ability to place some restrictions on sharing for some of their data, the most important condition for sharing their data is to receive proper citation credit when others use their data. For 92% of the respondents, it is important that their data are cited when used by other researchers. Eighty-six percent of survey respondents also noted that it is appropriate to create new datasets from shared data. Most likely, this response relates directly to the overwhelming response for citing other researchers' data. The breakdown of this section is presented in Table 13.
Categories of data sharing considered:
- I would use other researchers' datasets if their datasets were easily accessible.
- I would be willing to place at least some of my data into a central data repository with no restrictions.
- I would be willing to place all of my data into a central data repository with no restrictions.
- I would be more likely to make my data available if I could place conditions on access.
- I am satisfied with my ability to integrate data from disparate sources to address research questions.
- I would be willing to share data across a broad group of researchers who use data in different ways.
- It is important that my data are cited when used by other researchers.
- It is appropriate to create new datasets from shared data.
-
Data sharing practices. Only about a third (36%) of the respondents agree that others can access their data easily, although three-quarters share their data with others (see Table 11). This shows there is a willingness to share data, but it is difficult to achieve or is done only on request.
There is a willingness, but not a way!
